Ok was going to buy a CZ858 Canadian, but thought, for the price and a little or a lot more, why not get an AK. So my question is , what AK's are we allow to have in Canada, that's NR and good to shoot anywhere I can shoot my JR or SKS...etc.
And what would be the going rate?? $2500.00-3500.00 or...?
Thanks for looking.
Cheers
Brian

Valmet M78 and Valmet Hunter... that is it.

You can get either for as low as $2000 to and upside average of $4000 range out of the US, then add import fees. If you want the M78 in x39, expect to pay closer to $6000. It was rare. Note they cost that in the US, and they have all sorts of AKs available to them. They are expensive because they are good, rare, and out of production everywhere, not just cuz it is the only one they can get.

Valmet Hunter came in 223, 308, 30-06 and 243...

Also the Valmet Hunter, which is an AK action. They come in a couple of calibers, but not 7.62x39, though that being said I have one converted from .308

Edited - Fenceline beat me to it!

So the Valmet M78 has the closest "look" to a standard looking AK. And I think I've seen a converted Hunter that looked good too. Do they make a conversion kit for the Hunter, to make it look more M78/ AKish or are they just one off's, that someone has spent a lot of time doing ,there own conversion. And yes would like it in 7.62x39, but it sound like it will be the most expensive one to find or convert?
Thanks for all the great postings.

All the conversions are one offs. Galil parts can work but take some fitting. Regular AK parts for the majority of the time do not work as direct drop in replacement parts. If you do a search you will find several threads on Valmet to Galil-lookalike conversions. The Hunter is the model preferred for such things.

Only the Valmet M78. Excessively rare and expect to pay $6k plus for something that would otherwise be a $800 gun if it wasnt for our laws prohibiting all other AK varients.

Actually wrong, take a quick gander at what these rifles still cost state side even with all their AK flow.
Full auto M78 7.62x39 anywhere from 15000-25000$ and up

I got mine for $2800 US when the dollar was at par... plus import fees. Came out to about $3100. M78 in 308.

Gunbroker.

You can find them occasionally listed for $2000. Hunters usually. It isn't impossible, you just have to be a picky shopper and stay on the search.

Put it this way, some know what the true value of a 7.62x39 valmet and it shows cuz I had multiple people want the rifle and it sold to the first person at full price with shipping in he matter of a few hours
