lubing your new AR

https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/523308-AR15-Lubrication-and-cleaning-thread

Use any oil you want, it doesn't really matter. What matters is that you do oil it from time to time.

I've never run my AR's dripping with oil. That is completely pointless and just makes a mess.

I take my rifle apart, clean it, and apply a light film of oil to all parts that slide against another part. There is no need to oil everything in there and coat the whole thing in oil. A drop or two on the trigger pins (from the inside), one in the sear area, another couple drops on the bolt rings before I put it into the carrier, a drop on the cam pin, and a couple drops on the carrier on the contact points, a drop on the charge handle, then assemble. I have never had an AR malfunction from lack of lube and I've owned more AR's than I can remember over the last 15 years and have run thousands of rounds through them. Every 300-500 (sometimes more) rounds I'll give the BCG a couple drops and I only do a really thorough cleaning every 1000+ or once a year whichever comes first.

I always wondered why some guys are always looking for a cheaper oil to use in their gun but if you're using 100ml of oil with every lube it becomes clear that person has no idea how lubrication works and why they can't afford to oil their gun with a quality gun oil.

As you can see from the 60+ responses from the guys as to which works best it really doesn't matter that much what you use, what matters is that you clean and lubricate your rifle when it needs it. This is why I attached the link to the sticky so you know how to lube your rifle, the oil you choose is up to you.

I did, just thought a reminder was needed as everyone seems to be more concerned with what oil they think is best rather than how to lube it which is what I think the OP initially wanted help with.

I’m sure by now the op knows how to lube AR 15 and has multiple options for what to use. :ar15: :dancingbanana:

This is how I do it as well:

-clean with CLP
-wipe all the dirt away
-apply CLP
-wipe off the excess

Its useless to run an AR dripping wet with *insert people's favorite snake oil*

CLP as well for me, runs flawlessly and I'm a 1000 round from last "cleaning"

I really do find it works well. I expect to clean mine around the thousand round mark as well, so I'm glad to hear it's working for you.

I took my AR out last January in -10C weather and had no issues. It was great. Far more reliable than expected, with not one single issue over the ~150 rounds I put through it at that time.

I've found that as long as I don't use grease in the winter my rifles all function fine in the cold. The type of oil makes very little difference.

Its been working for 17 years, all year long, on 4 continents :p

Like they say: if ot works, dont fix it

Cheers

If you do your own oil changes or drive a POS just decant a bit from your liter of motor oil (I always have at least a liter in the trunk). 5w20 seems to be perfect, I just give the bolt a good coat (not dripping). As the Gun Jesus put it, they spent an awful lot of money engineering something that needs to do the same thing in far worse conditions.

Ian the "Gun Jesus", apt I think, who ever said it first thank you.

If you want the best without the hype, Synthetic Motor Oil. Lubing your Rifle compared to lubing an Internal Combustion Engine, is kind of like lifting your hand over your head, compared to lifting a Piano over your head. Think that's foolish? Try filling your crankcase with "insert cool lube name here" see how it does compared to the cheapest recycled 10w30 you can buy.

Suprised at the amount of motor oil comments. And the relatively light weights like 0w20. You guys just using whatever your truck takes or would a thicker oil like 15w40 work better until -30. I use white lithium on the bcg. Oil everywhere else.

It's great, summer, or winter. I just rub an even coat on the entire BCG, and the Firing Pin/Cam Pin. After 400-500 rounds the carbon just wipes off. 10w, 5w, doesn't seem to matter.
