Hey Guys.

I've been getting several questions about scope mounts these days, I've tried to pass on what I know from my experiences. First I would recommend anyone read the sticky at the top of the page......skip the first part.....as the second part is just the updated version.

I took some pictures a little while ago....I don't know why I didn't put the old and new style Arms mounts in there???

So here is what some of these mounts look like.

Here are various angles of 4 different mounts, 3 Smith and 1 McCann mount.

Here is what you are looking at, L - R, Top to bottom.

1 - SMith Acog mount, I recommend for anyone using a Sage stock or anyone that wants a little more eye relief on there rifle, as this will allow you to bring your scope back about 1.5 inches. You can also unbolt the rail to allow direct mounting of an Acog. No stacking tolerances there (Sparrow)

1 - McCann mount. These were only around for a few years, heavy steel construction with rinky-dink bolt on weaver rails, they were rated very well ...for a time. One of these days I'll put a better rail on it. This mount is quite similar to the SA Gen 3 but requires you to drill thru the mounted block to fit your own receiver (stipper clip mount) I have never used it.....it's just part of the oddities I have collected over the years.

1 - Regular Smith #2006 mount with see thru 1913 rail

1 - Smith #2024 mount with see thru Weaver rail

Over the years I have used these mounts in this order

SA Gen 3 (sold it, it worked well....with a little loctite (blue) but it's very high)

Arms #18 (Old open style, will never sell it, still my favourite because it is so low)

Arms #18 New style.....jamming issues.....sold it.

Smith #2006 Another keeper!!!! The only better in my mind would be the Sadlak Titanium....but I'm sure someone will comment on the heating properties of the Ti being mounted to an 8620 receiver

Smith #2005 Acog once again a keeper but iron sights are now useless....not that I ever use them

Smith #2024 Weaver OK so I haven't used it....but except for the different rail and the stamping on the side.....I can't tell the difference.

So you guys......don't buy the crap mounts....IMHO the #2024 mount is the best bang for the $ right now. Smith said they were going to stop making them....but.....I've heard of more batches being made. Get one while you can !!

So there you go my $ .02

Okay, no laughing GGFB

No laughing here. :)

The Smith, Arms and Sadlak mounts are 3 point mounts (the 3rd point is a set screw and mounting surface that touches the front of the receiver, at the barrel end.

The SA 3rd and McCann and some others are 2 point mounts,

All of these mounts do mount to the left side (bolt stop side), were there is a groove and screw hole. The second mounting point requires the user to remove the stripper clip guide (anyone with a nail and hammer can do this....carefully) Once the pin is out....tap the clip guide out.

The Scope mounts come with a block of steel that slides into were the clip guide came out. Then it's a matter of lining everything up and tightening it. In some cases a dab of blue loctite is required as the M14 pounds the SH** out of scopes.....so buy a good one.....but that doesn't mean $$$$$

Hope that was clear enough.....I'll try and find some other pictures.

Look at the bottom photo..(of smith mounts).at the far left....is the clip guide replacement block.
The large hole in the middle is where the side bolt and cam go into the receiver's side.
Just to the right of the 'property' marking on the bottom mount is the " 3rd " contact point and set screw.
Also to help line things up is a long goove/line going across the bottom (just below the large hole) this is matched up to the similar indexing groove in the receiver.

Here is the side of receiver that the mount attaches to.
See screw hole, horizontal and vertical indexing grooves..

Hope that answers it all

I think someone might consider adding this to GG&FB's other sticky on mounts? Or new sticky?

Very helpful posting!

GG&FB,

Thank you for doing this! :)

I appreciate it very much when someone takes the time to put together a posting like this just to help out a bunch of us.

Best wishes, Jeff/1911.

The Smith website now says that they have put the 2024 back into regular production because of demand and popularity. FWIW.

Read the first post.

This is one of the hardest rifles to scope............you are going to get what you pay for.....that's all that I have to say.

I have not used this mount......from the looks of it.....it's very similar to a SA Gen3.......so there is a chance with proper mounting and some blue loctite that is might work.

What do you guys have to say about the Marstar Mounts?

M14-103-L.jpg

LP-MNT-914-450px.jpg

I just recieved my LP-MNT-914 mount today from a dealer on this site, I gotta say they suck!! It maybe my fault to a certain extent, but they have no strength what so ever. I started to torque down the dovetail that slips into the stripper clip guide with the provided allan key and and dove tail split in half at the screw hole??? maybe I over tightend, but I think the metal is way to soft. The screw that goes into the reciever stripped on first tightning....maybe a different thread pattern??? Anyway goes back to GGFB's comment on ya get what you pay for. Anyone got an extra scope base? I ordered that one because there were none of the other Marstar M14-103's available that I could find anywhere in AB or Marstar. They are suposed to be fairly good. I was just hopeing this one would get me by at the Summerland shoot. Guess M14 stays home this trip.

Hi.

I originally purchased a Marstar "Tactical" $150 mount for my M305.

While it certainly looks thick and beefy, all the Loctite in the world could not get it to hold zero.

And I tried...I really tried...I tried so hard and so many times that I went past Marstar's 30 day warranty period and could not send it back ( Not that I can blame Marstar for this..it's 100% on me).

I ended up buying a ARMS from Wolverine...great service...awesome flawless mount...nasty price.

I know that some people have experienced ejection issues...I am fortunate that I have not so for me the low mount is a good thing.
