M40 Family - Who owns one?

Someday enough of us need to get together to recreate this picture :p

It might be difficult, I don't know how many M16A2 rifles are in Canada...but I suspect getting 5 together would be a challenge.

Well they don't have to be actual M16A1 rifles since no one in Canada owns a REAL M40A1 either :p

But I was more talking about having a lineup of M40A1 rifles, not specifically the M16A2 rifles.

I had my Fake M-40 out on the hunt last week,,, did a quick free hand with sling at 268 meter 12" rock in rapped fire...

Easy Peasy with all 3 hits...

I passed up on 2 small White Tail bucks and 22 Doe's threw the day...

Most of them were well with in the 400 to 440 mark... It would of been waaaaay to easy to fill the freezer,,, to early in the season for the small critters...

The fake M-40 in 6.5/06 at 12 lbs is like shooting a 243 Winchester,,, next to nill for recoil...

140gr Nosler PT's @ 2980 ft-per seconds...
More then enough for a clean harvest at those distances,,, boots on the ground on the 2 outings...

Sloooooow and steady with lots of breaks in the ruck,,, normally 7 to 9 km rounders,,, I must be doing it right since I've walked up to most of the Doe's with in 80 to 100 meters... Ha

Maybe this slow middle age is what I needed... LOL...

My eyes are still open for the Moose and Elk draws this year,,, only time will tell...

Cheers from the North

Off to the range for a confirmation sight-in...

So far so good on the last check-in...

I'm pretty thrilled that the fake M is holding in there,,, mostly due to the weigth of this rig...

I'll put the Vortex 3-15 back on since the FFP reticle will improve the odds of tagging something at distance,,, I like the Nikon Monarch 3-12 since it works good in low light conditions,,, but the SFP is to much to think about on the hunting grounds...

The club house heat is cranked up,,, so I can load a few extra rounds to finish up the season...

Cheers from the North

Yuppers,,, 20 shots of glory yesterday,,, and more to follow in the days ahead...

I drove the back roads to the range yesterday,,, so relaxing in the Sloooooow lane of life,,, time to scout out the hunting grounds and take in the day of unknowns...

Of course I knew that I'd make it to the shooting range at some point in the day,,, Ha...

I rolled past the range gates at 11 am,,, reloading kit and components to top off the hunting ammo to keep me in the hunt...

My 200 meter Zero was spot on,,, good thing for that since it allowed me to chat with 3 other shooters that were also dialing in... They had some pretty nice irons as well...

Tactical 308's,,, 6.5's,,, and a few heavy hitters... I guess I would of been in the middle of the pack with these folks since my tech rifles were at home on this outing... 1 gun at a time when the hunting season is a go...

The on-road duffle bag of re-loading caught a few of the fellows off guard,,, they thought that this was the neet'est set-up they've ever seen,,, ammo prep and reloading at the shooting range... LOL...

Year 6 for me doing this,,, that way I can change things up on the spot at my choosing...

Lifes just that simple when we choose to run tactical in the field,,, of course some of the brass prep takes place at home,,, but the majority of the re-loading takes place at the range or in the wilds...

Old School hand press allows for this...

Any-who,,, I jumped onto the gongs at 300 on out to 600 to make sure that my home made ballistics chart was spot on,,, a few shots hot,,, and a few cold,,, the medium contour mid weight barrel is deffinatly working as it holds zero on all the intended targets...

Deffinatly a plus for this fake M-40 hunting rifle,,, yesterday's shoot give me some ideas on the next custom build for my tactical 308 Remington...

I'll deffinatly use the Wildcat Composites stock since I have one on hand,,, wide flat base fore-end as well as the custom drop down pistol grip,,, I sure don't miss the old school stocks that I use to run,,, hard to believe that those straight hand grip stocks worked back in the day... Ha

Ain't no way that I'd ever own another one of them again...

So I rapped up my day with limited shots and 50+ extra rounds incase the hunting grounds get Intresting,,, a few extra pipe cleaning shots for the just incase...

Good times fore sure as the cold weather starts to roll in along the Eastern Slopes of Alberta...

Got my barrel from Hirsch yesterday.. Not the ''spec'' barrell but close

Bartlein SS 1-12 5r (instead of 6 groves). M24/M40 profile

I just had Hirsch send the same Bartlein barrel to Terry at Black Art Rifles so my build can be started, that and collecting cans and bottles for a scope.

A lot of guys down south use Schneiders but the original A1’s would have been Hart or Atkinson. My completely unobjective opinion is your Bartlein is easily as good as either!

Thanks for posting AG,,, that's one sweet package...

I can't wait to get my second M-40 build going next month... Hunting season is still underway...

I agree that these M series rifles are a hand full shooting free hand,,, I follow the fellow Named """German""" when it comes to getting a clean break using full bore rifles...

He's not the top-tear shooter,,, but he explains how to set-up and improve the free hand skills needed to accomplish it...

Very skilled at sharing the information...

I'll admit that my medium weigth rifle is easier to swing and hold on target,,, but my custom made Heavy weight shoots tighter groups...

It follows threw with less recoil staying on target for a split second longer...

Part 4 of confirming my sight-in points for this year's hunt with the ERB-C reticle...

The new rifle is looking pretty old after this hunting season,,, lots of wet conditions and mud from 4@!!,,, Ha...

I took a big tumble last week in a box Canyon,,, both me and the rifle took a slid down the em'bankment for 30 to 40 feet as I rolled over the rifle once,,, good on me for dis-charging the chamber before sliding on down...

LOL

Mud and rocks caked into everything,,, I cleaned up the trigger and bolt the best I could to finish out the day,,, the scope needed an adjustment since it got bumped off...

I pulled it apart today for a cleaning and optic reset,,, this winters project is a solid 1 peace mount and the beefy'er rings...

Range day tomorrow to get onto target for the last leg of the hunting season...

Cheers from the icey North

PS: Lucky for the tuff hunting gear as it saved my leg from getting torn open on the sharp rocks... Ha... No more Billy Goat climbs for this Kow Girl...

Part 1 of hunting season is rapped up,,, so it's time to hit the 1450 yard range with both rifles to make sure there lined up for the late season Elk hunt...

Ye Ha to good times...

It will give me time to plan part of my 308 build now that 90% of it is completed,,, I'll add a bottom feed and I'm thinking about a standard 3-12x42 or 3-15x42 optic with a FFP MOA reticle...

Just a bit of the simple stuff...

Of course this is the year that I sell off all my un-used scopes since I have way to many of them... Ha

I'm pretty happy with the Remmy BDL Left hand 700,,, the darn thing seems to be shooting good,,, I ran the frugal Vortex PST 3-15x50 on it this year as it took a real beating... The tumble off the icy Ridge and lots of bush wacking... Mud till """hills 1/2 acer""" and a few water crossing that didn't go as planned... That's what happens with these bush rifles...

If it ain't going to get used / not abused,,, then its not worth owning,,, I have 1 safety Queen rifle,,, the others are lined up to work in the field...

Once the Elk season raps up its Quad track time along the Eastern Slopes of Alberta,,, frozen wolf and Lynx time...
Predator control at its finest...

The trappers cabin is a go this year,,, a chance to kindle the good times with our friends as normal... Long nights under the stars and lawn chair time by the fire...

Funny how the coffee taste better off grid...

Cheers from the North

PS: I never thought that a 6.5 A-square would fit into my hunting and shooting sports,,, boy was I wrong for not taking this on 20 years ago...

Looks like we're heading out at the Bragg range for 2 days,,, the wood stove will keep the cabin toasty warm...

That's one of the nice things about the shooting sports up here above the 49th,,, heated club houses to stay warm as we prep our ammo,,, jont down notes,,, drink coffee and visit with those that show up... Ha...

There's always time to step out onto the firing line to luanch a few bullets... Its just part of the good times...

Maybe I'll shoot a few ladder test,,, a couple of box runs,,, take on the dart board challange,,, chase the ever changing winds,,, and practic the set-up getting the rifles planted and some trigger control...

A bit of everything let's say...

Yuppers,,, I can't wait to draft up a plan for my second build this winter,,, life is good that way,,, no TV since there's nothing on that suits my life style,,, so I keep busy doing my own thing...

Thanks again for this thread AG,,, what a great way for those of us that live the dream and par-take in it in real time... 366/ 8 days a week/ all year long...

Those of us in the family have to have extra days to squeeze it all in you know...

I'll post some photos when I get things going...

Cheers from the North

Sadly there is no heated shooting bench at our range and even then, the range is only 200 yards max. I really need to win the lottery so I can buy enough land to build a private 1000 yard range here with a full covered shooting bench and with heat :p

Finally put the new rifle to use, put a deer in the freezer this weekend. No tale of an 800 yd shot though, the bugger trotted up and stood 30 yds from the stand. I did see a couple that were out about 800 yds, but not confident enough to try that shot yet.

Congrats! Packed mine but never got the chance this year

Good on you D-Man,,, that was my plan all along,,, a few scuffs and scrapes when our boots cover ground...

I didn't cover as much ground as I wanted this year,,, 20 hikes with the total of just over 100 miles combined,,, mostly 6 mile loops at a super slow pace,,, long gone are the 20 mile rucks... Ha...

At times I think the 11.9 lb beast is too much,,, then when I get a chance to get a few shots off I realize that its just right... Pin hole-ing at distance definitely puts a Grin on my face,,, and it's deadly accurate when its planted on the poles or off the pack...

I don't have to use the other hand since the weigth keeps it down...

Any-who,,, range day tomorrow as we get geared up for the late season Elk run,,, much easier to spot now that the main season has rapped up...

Cheers from the North
