Well I decided to console myself by taking out my homemade M40 today and do a bit of shooting. I haven't actually put many rounds through it, but had it zeroed for 200 yds last time I took it out.
A few shots to re-familiarize myself with it at 200 then I moved out to 300.
Pretty good wind but took 4 pokes at the steel and this was the result.
The group of 4 was my shooting, the 2 pairs were a Tikka .204 my buddy was shooting with a Bushnell Match Pro.
I was holding high and left, just to the right of the left-most hole drilled through the 12" plate (if any of that makes sense).
As similar as the divots in the plate look, they were 2 different rifles.
I measured approx 1 3/8" center to center on my 4 shots, trying to be conservative with the measurement in case someone wants to chime in and say center to center isn't accurate. Pretty happy with that, considering I didn't really have a solid poa other than my hold off with a poopy Chinese replica of a 60 some year old scope.
The big question I guess is if I can replicate that and shoot consistently. 4 shots isn't gospel and I know it was only 300 yds.
A mild steel plate isn't necessarily the best for measuring groups, lots of splash and distortion.
I took a couple shots at the next plate which was ranged at 462 yds but I only hit it on my second shot (missed the next few) and then I got rattled and quit shooting it. Took my ball and went home
Need to spend some time with this rifle and figure out some dope for it, as well as get dialed in for my visual holds at different ranges. Lots of practice to do.
Having a whiskey, rambling.
