M40 Family - Who owns one?

Well I decided to console myself by taking out my homemade M40 today and do a bit of shooting. I haven't actually put many rounds through it, but had it zeroed for 200 yds last time I took it out.

A few shots to re-familiarize myself with it at 200 then I moved out to 300.

Pretty good wind but took 4 pokes at the steel and this was the result.

The group of 4 was my shooting, the 2 pairs were a Tikka .204 my buddy was shooting with a Bushnell Match Pro.

I was holding high and left, just to the right of the left-most hole drilled through the 12" plate (if any of that makes sense).

As similar as the divots in the plate look, they were 2 different rifles.

I measured approx 1 3/8" center to center on my 4 shots, trying to be conservative with the measurement in case someone wants to chime in and say center to center isn't accurate. Pretty happy with that, considering I didn't really have a solid poa other than my hold off with a poopy Chinese replica of a 60 some year old scope.

The big question I guess is if I can replicate that and shoot consistently. 4 shots isn't gospel and I know it was only 300 yds.

A mild steel plate isn't necessarily the best for measuring groups, lots of splash and distortion.

I took a couple shots at the next plate which was ranged at 462 yds but I only hit it on my second shot (missed the next few) and then I got rattled and quit shooting it. Took my ball and went home

Need to spend some time with this rifle and figure out some dope for it, as well as get dialed in for my visual holds at different ranges. Lots of practice to do.

Having a whiskey, rambling.

Great shooting! beautiful rifle.

The Hi Lux 3-9x is a pretty primitive optic compared to whats available these days. I have been debating putting something more modern on the rifle to see if I can figure out what it's actually capable of (within my limitations of human error).

There is just something though on taking this old tech and pulling some amazing shooting out of it though. It was always interesting to put my M40A1 or my M40 up against modern rifles with modern scopes and pulling the same groups or better.

Agreed.

My 3-9 is currently zeroed for 200 yds, but I'm struggling with holdover at anything over 400.

I'm going to try re-zeroing for for 400 and see if I can split the difference between under and over. If I can figure out getting hits to 600 I'll be happy.

I know that's not really "long range" to some but baby steps.....

26” Rock Creek 11.25 twist 416 stainless 5R 308. Stainless short action, polished and blue printed, a modified A3 stock. Leupold MK4 8.5 x25 50mm optic, badger 30 moa base. I went with a 200 m zero for the 175gr SMK at a 10 shot average of 2801 fps.

Looks good. I want to put together one more rifle with my A5 stock, but I'd like to go .223 or something and mount my Sightmark Wraith (can't afford anything better) on it for the coyotes that howl in the field behind my shop.

They are at it right now in fact. Dammit.

Great shooting! beautiful rifle.

I'll say it was the benchmark barrel on this one, not me. It does seem to be pretty accurate despite my best efforts :p

I need to shoot this rifle more. Need to get better at holding for different ranges as I spoiled myself recently with a target scope dialing for distance.

I wouldn't even know where to look on their website for one.

Do they sell direct to us in Canada? When I was looking for my a1 stock a couple years ago I phoned them and the guy told me to buy it through a dealer....

Another question I have is about your new smear. Can you see any mesh in the finish? That was one thing I thought was kinda cool about some of the original smears, they just weren't that refined. I like the blemishes.

Yep they ship to Canada directly. The new smears are not as refined as the regular forest camo HTGs. They come in with blemishes and imperfections.
