M40 Family - Who owns one?

Your welcome TL,,, I didn't know nothing about them 5 years ago,,, just happened that my gun Smith friend pointed me in their directions.

I like dealing direct since it saves us funds in the long hual.

The M-40 idea is a good one since we can utilize our rifles for hunting or competition along with general plinking

Mine will have a writing in the back...

''I had a chance on a M40A1, ArmedGinger bought it. Now, all I have to show for is this lousy T-Shirt'' HAHAHAHAH

Your time will come :d

Like I said, this was my second chance at one. I hesitated on one and another member snapped it up. Kicked myself for a couple months. When this one showed up I started liquidating some of my collection left right and center to get the money together as fast as possible. I was worried I'd sell some of my guns and the one I wanted would sell before I could pay for it.

I'm just busting your balls ! Got my hands on the ''second'' coolest sniper rifle of all times for an awesome price.... It also starts with an ''M'' :)

I agree,,, it would be nice to have the real deal,,, but a clone will have to work for me so I can wear it out over the years.

The after market stuff is fairly affordable,,, I have a extra stock,,, New Heavy weight barrel and a Jewel trigger for my build,,, all bought and paided for.

They were take offs from another project,,, about $4 to $500 to complete it with 1 of the many optics of my choosing.

I'm going with the small couture glass in 2.5x10 or 3x15 since my drawer is the tickle trunk of good times,,, of course that's not saying that I wouldn't throw on 1 of the other 6x24 optics on it for plinking in the off season.

Endless options on a budget fore sure.

Ok question time. Should I PAINT my M40A1 rifle? The stock colour is nice and all but it is sort of plain. Originally the USMC would grab a can of Krylon and go to town. It is somewhat easy to clean off with some elbow grease and some paint thinner.

So I was sort of thinking maybe a Desert Storm sort of paint job. Sort of like in Generation Kill or Jarhead complete with the tape on the scope, the tape over the floor plate, and the taped on cheek rest. :p

Fun fact, the rifle is Jarhead is the only "real" spec build of an M40A1 I can find in a movie. The one from Generation Kill is close and has the right MST-100 scope, but you notice the barrel is not exact profile and has a rail. The one from Jarhead though seems to be a proper clone. The rings are even correct with the screws going up from the bottom instead of down from the top normal dovetail rings. It may even be a real M40A1 rifle. It's strange to see the tape over the floor plate which was supposedly a real USMC thing as a "just in case" the shooter hit the button to drop the floor plate or incase it decided to wear out enough to drop the floor plate when you shot.

Tough call on that one....yours is pretty nice clone, not sure I’d mess with it.

One question on the desert paint job though....would the A1 version have been used there vs the A3 or A5? Wondering on the validity of A1 in either movie?

The M40A1 was in "service" right up until 2009 although not front line use for sure. The M40A3 was starting to be brought in from 1996 until about 2001. So it wasn't available for the first Gulf War. There were still M40A1 rifles though being used until 2001. The M40A5 started in 2009.

The Jarhead movies rifles were actually built by a retired 2112, I think it’s the owner of KC Custom Firearms over on the M40 forum.

I’m kind of supportive of the idea of trying some Krylon on your rifle, I did a little “faux” weathered tan work on my M24 clone to give it more of the same look. After all, to me anyway, I like building clones, which are meant to look like an issue rifle, so why not extend that to the finish?

There are tons of good photos of all the desert tan style camo Krylon jobs on A1’s out there for you to choose from as well, and if you don’t like it you can always wipe it off. Maybe I’m biased too as I was already planning that for my next A1 clone.

I did a Krylon job on my Mk13 Mod1 clone to resemble an issue rifle and am happy with it, again can always wipe it off.

When I was training with the Marines from 2nd Division in North Carolina back in '99 the Marines were using M40A1s.

The M40A3's were in the system, but they weren't keen on the extra weight.

So after accidentally putting a hydrogen peroxide cleaning solution in my eye by accident (my dominant eye even :p ) I decided to head to the range. Beautiful day and have the entire range to myself! Almost no wind, 5°C, and barely a cloud in the sky!

My 100 yard group wasn't that great but after 10 rounds I turned it into one large ragged hole :d

My 215 yard groups averaged just over 1/2 MOA. I've done better but I'm using my eye as an excuse ;)

Your particular rifle has a very distinct pattern on the stock (as you must know, you've posted pics on various forums and I'm assuming you've seen the responses), I wouldn't spray it if it were mine. Especially after seeing what the cost is to get a stock made, which is what I'm going through right now.

I can appreciate wanting "the look" but I'd say leave it as is. Tape and paint won't make it shoot better (ok maybe tape and padding will), or make it more of a legit Marine rifle. If you want a more recent type build, start with another one and shake that rattle can to your heart's content.

Yeah that is one thing is the pattern on the stock is at least different. It's not a smear but not a full on woodland either. But it's not a return stock either. The only reason I was even considering painting the gun is the fact that it's not hard to be reversed, just elbow grease and some paint thinner (I've painted a few in the past). A lot of the guns I've owned though are built to be clones of either movie guns or various military guns. Right now I'll probably leave it then. Either way it is fun to shoot.
