Mannlichers....

Nothing fancy here, just a Ruger no1 RSI in 7x57 that I got locally last week… changed the horribly hard recoil pad for a nicer one, made a nice classic leather sling and mounted a little Leupold 2-7x28( I think) makes for a nice little mountain rig!

And this one, a husky in 9.3x62 I got from a CGNer a few weeks ago… made a nice leather sling for it to, cleaned the bore and all look pretty good! Here is what Baribal had to say about it!
“ Hi David,

HVA never made 98 carbines. The rifle probably was a model 649 when it started life and was modified to "Hellstock" configuration. There was a huge aftermarket business in Sweden so they keep their rifles "up to date" over time. Serial number and markings would help determining tighter manufacture date, but I am positive for a post 1949 model 649.
The changes seem well done, the configuration is quite interesting.

The barrel was shortened and most likely recrowned with the front sight ramp repositioned. The stock is a replacement, seems of good quality, the bolt shroud was either stripped from it's bluing or replaced.

All that being said, that seems to be a nice rifle.

Hope that helps,”

Very nice. Looks like Yurrtas out of Istanbul supplied the wood. I have bout some nice blanks from him. Some for 2000 Euros. Been drying for 7 years now to the local climate. Yurrtas is great to deal with and he is on Instagram. Loads of wood to choose from.
He gets his wood from the Van Lake area of the very eastern part of Turkey in the unstable region between the Kurds and Turks. Big high mountain area. He put out a great video on Utube explaining the background. Easy to find. If you can’t find it lemme know.

Ah. Found it.

I've planted walnut, my climate is quite similar to Lake Van. It's my understanding that it is wind in the winter that gives the nice grain and we certainly get that. As a joke I call them my Grandkids" retirement trees.

Great idea...how old is a mature walnut tree?

Given enough land in an appropriate location with optimum growing conditions (the Okanangan?), growing walnut seems a smart long-term investment move, especially with the prices that blanks are going for these days. And they are only going to get more expensive. Although, after the trees grow up a bit, you might need to hire some guards. Apparently, poaching from woodlots is a real thing these days.

Hey Rob, Joel Morris here. I think I bought some 6.5x54ms brass from you years ago. I will be keeping my more worn "Hemingway" configuration 1903 single trigger for hunting. What I will be posting has the spring loaded Lyman peep sight as in your photo, was wondering if you knew the model # of that sight. This is a custom job by a gunsmith who has passed away by the last name of Coran I think. Neidner skeleton grip cap, swing/lever elev. adj. Lyman, skip line checker, stunning Fiddleback figure walnut from nose to toe, full stock of course and in 6.5x54ms. This is fresh blood never before seen on the market. $4900 w/trades possible. Oh yes, I need your ZKK600 spare standard un-set trigger if you still have it.
Joel.
