Hmmm... ok, so as I read this, IPSC is no more at EOHC as of right now?

I did volunteer to help with the setup for the Oct. 7 match that got cancelled, but until I got an email from EOHC that had a link to the thread posted here with the title "Looking for your next IPSC match?" (or words to that effect), I didn't even know about the need for volunteers. Maybe there needs to be better communication in the future?

Anyway, it's sad that IPSC is done at EOHC. For me that will mean the end of IPSC competition, since I just don't have the time to travel all over the place for matches. I was really looking forward to shooting a couple a year.

Bummer.

Clammy

This is one instance where I DON'T want people to read between the lines.....

IPSC is finished at EOHC for the SEASON. I have every confidence that a suitable IPSC rep will be found in time for next year's schedule. It's sad that the last two matches at EOHC had to be cancelled this year but there were just not enough volunteers.

I persoanlly would rather cancel a match than run it half-assed.

Wish we had a club around here like that

Clammy, IPSC is not done this year in Ottawa. The RA Centre will have matches almost every month (6 between October and April). The first one is on October 28th.

Google ra centre gun for the website, and there is a PDF for the club calendar.

Saturdays is IPSC practice: 2pm-11pm and there are often 20-30 shooters practicing on Saturdays. Upstairs to the pub afterwards. What more could you ask for when it is -20 degrees outside??

See you there!

Oh yeah, I forgot about the RA Center... d-uh, says me!

I'll have to check out the schedule.

Thanks for reminding me! My disappointment is seriously reduced now! :D

Cheers!

Unfortunate you cancelled the match as the people who help out are punished as well. I notice quite a few guys who shoot and scoot at matches and the ELITE who stand around talking and practicing their stage while everyone else patches.
I can't believe that you are allowed to pay a fee and not work. Do they have little slaves to take care of their work and patching or does this work just get dumped off on the rest of the voulonteers? Like, because I don't pay this fee I would also have to do a portion of someone elses work? If so no wonder you can't find voulonteers! Oh who came up with that idea?

the fee is usually for vendors who want to come and shoot and then man their tables. it's used for sponsorship so the hosting club can then purchase more gear for props and prizes and such. I don't think it was ever intended to be used strictly as a way out of working at a match for regular competitors. I have no problem with vendors doing it.

It is being used that way. Having run stages for years you always get a few workers who don't do anything. They are ther last to get out of their chair with patches in their hand ect. I would rather have them pay the fee and buy more 2 x 4's and have a smaller crew that actually works.

Agreed. Perhaps those competitors that feel they are too important (or too lazy) to work should hire the equivalent of caddies......:p

it would be neat if there was an option to hire someone to work for you, that might generate some bucks for the various clubs too.

At the nationals this year, there was a young fellow who hired himself out to two people to patch for them on their work days. (I think one had to work at his real job and the other felt he was too ill to work) I think he got $100 for the day from each. Kid got money, match got help. Both guys still got to shoot, sounds like win-win-win...

Continuing Sponsorship...this comment really stung -

"Actually, I have a real problem with people bribing their way out of working and then showing up fresh as a peach to shoot when everyone else has a day of humping it in the hot sun under their belts. It's an unfair advantage. Not everyone can afford to pay the sponsorship fee, and if everyone could there would still be no one to work the match. I think everyone should work, or everyone should not work. No in between. Of course if no one works there's no match, so no problem....right?
Rob, have a look at the commotion at the table at the end of the day and during lunch; it is by no means a chance for me to sit on my butt and show up the next day fresh as a peach. Add into that this year that I was on the range helping the MD hours before you showed up and hours after you went home, I'd say that your comment is not only a miss, but a no-shoot.

One major reason I choose not to work on the ranges anymore is the perceived conflict of interest. If I DQ a good customer, I might loose that customer. If I have a close call that I chose not to DQ someone (due to my vantage point, it was OK) and its a good customer, I might be accused of favoritism and loose some other customer. In fact, I was asked if I would be available for an arbitration committee last year at a L3 last year and declined due to the fact that a customer was involved.

I think sponsor tables at the nationals are an important thing. In many cases, it's a way to get a shooter back in the game when equipment fails. It offers a chance for people to see new and interesting equipment and it adds to the general atmosphere of a big match.

FWIW Rob, over the last three nationals combined; my sponsorship has been a total of $5000 cash straight to the match budgets (with no requirement for them to sell something off or raffle it) and to my knowledge, all of them needed the money to put on the match.

My son ended up working half a day for a "worker" who was not feeling very well.....

True he was already working on the stage for "free" but he got a charge out of it and I think worked all the harder once he was "getting paid".

Of course...........he went right to the sales area and bought a range bag!!

You Son out worked alot of competitors on the range. That's part of the problem. Some get it, some people don't.

Why can't the Nationals be like other matches (here in S. Ont. anyway)where the squad patches/resets their own targets? Nobody pays to 'get out of working'
If you shoot - you patch, if not - you answer to the rest of your squad.

The only 2 not working on any given stage are 1.) the 'on-deck' shooter 2.) the 'just completed the stage' shooter.

I agree whole-heartedly but the reason this particular match was cancelled ws lack of people to build it.

I am one of the IPSC shooters that call EOHC their home club. No, I didn't volunteer for the match set-up, nor did I intend to shoot it, as I am going to be on course for those two entire weekends.

When I can, I will volunteer for any match that I shoot. At a minimum I will put myself on the last squad of the last day so that I can help clean up, and I will patch and reset like a madman all day.
I have to say, however, that there wasn't much notice for the requirement for volunteers. I suppose I should have noticed in SitRep that the match was scheduled, and then called Nick, since I am pretty sure that no one else would have been in charge of the match...My fault, I guess.

Can I make a suggestion? How about a work party during the week in the evening...? I know that that is about the only time that I can really be available.

It's an effort to even make the time for the match, let alone an entire day the weekend before. I can't even find the time to actually practice, so the matches are really the only times that I can shoot...Safe to say that I am not going to be competing with anyone but myself, until I can find the time to start practicing.

All this to say that I will volunteer when I *can*. I fully realize that this sport is dependent on volunteers. I worked RusselMania, and didn't even shoot at all. But the fact remains that shooting and IPSC are not the #1 priorities in my life. They are simply an entertaining way to dispose of money...When I can make time for it, I will...But if I can't, then I can't.

I agree with you Phil, a weekend day is a great time to set up a match, and 1 or 2 evenings for those that were unavailable on the weekend would be even better. Problem at EOHC is we have no hydro and therefore no flood lamps and it gets dark at 7pm now. With flood lights a work party from 6pm to 9 or 10 pm would be great!

Also, I guess an email sent to all local IPSC shooters with the volunteer time slots would be helpful. It would make the match director's job easier too. Dr. Nick, make sure my email is on the list!:)
