Metis hunting rights in Manitoba

How many hunters do you know that are OK with it???? Nobody buys licences in protest...Thats alot of money....Government would indeed listen...That would make news...

Ever see even one protest against native hunting rights? Ever see the natives protest to gain these rights? Then people say natives are lazy...They certainly were not fighting for their rights....

The majority of voters are not hunters and that's all that needs to be said.

This thread is ridiculous, aboriginal people have been hunting, trapping and fishing these ways long before there was Government. It should stay that way, anyone fighting for more laws should shake their head. If someone is out of line when taking game, the community deals with them pretty quick.

I know a few natives that fish on Superior for a "living". They told me once that their people have been doing it for centuries.

I told him "I'm pretty sure you're great great grandfather didnt trawl net Lake ####ing Superior in a 40' V12 Diesel boat".

The conversation kinda died after that.

This argument works insofar as you value equality above all, with the conquerer making the rules.

The issue here is that in order to achieve equality, you must remove rights of the previous inhabitants.

Equality by oppression.

And it is your system that is racist, the rules making power came over on the Kings boats and still is done in the name of the queen. That monarchist rule-making is gone haywire. Your own right to self defence is moot, given the policy of disarmament.

I say, make the rules equal, why shouldn't people of any race be able to become subsistence hunters?

Equality through freedom.

Revisionist history and playing the race card all in one post.

Anybody who is not in favour of equality in civilization is a racist descriminatory thug. Contrary to alot of PC garbage spewed by communist drones, it is not the white man alone who is only capable of racism because he is in a position of power..therefore he can only oppress. Just about every society across the globe has practiced racism and descrimination. I can think of numerous examples of aboriginal racism towards other races or other tribes.

Yes I have read some of the handouts where people try and rewrite history.

I will say its true that aboriginals in alot of cases were treated poorly in the past. This is a fact. I will also say its true that the idea of the aboriginals as some sort of custodian of the land and natural environmentalist is nothing more than pandering revisionist feel good tripe.

Aborginals are probably on average no more environmentalists than any other Canadian citizen. As such hunting rules and regulations should be equal for all those citizens that live within Canadian borders.

I find it laughable that some think because there were past wrongs, it justifies current wrongs. Either descrimination is wrong or its not.

As for hunting rules and regs? Anything reasonable that keeps the herds sustainable for future generations is not such a bad thing.

The ratio of number of hunters to number of animals today in Canada is why everyone can't be subsistance hunters.

..... and as the war of words and accusations rages on from both sides, conservation and game management goes out the window! There are only losers on all sides of this issue white, non white and the wildlife. We all need to protect the land, animals and way of life we love.
....
Exactly, this isn't a cultural rights issue. Its a game management issue.

This debate *is* the community dealing with individuals straying from the norm.

I agree. One condition, please return my pickup, quad, rifle and spotlight and continue hunting your traditional ways.

Non natives use boats, trucks and rifles. That isnt' the issue. The number of animals being killed, their age structure and the time of year they are killed is the issue.

Hard for anyone not to agree with that! Sometimes things are simpler than they look. :D

There are a few co-workers of mine that are avid ice fishermen.
A couple of years ago they took photos of improperly disposed of burbot that were netted by other local 'commercial' fishermen, who incidently caught these fish seeking out the target species of white fish. They counted 47 fish carcasses thrown willy nilly about the surface of the frozen lake. And it was pretty obvious where the huge nylon nets were first put in, and then pulled out of the augered holes on the ice surface. He also emailed these photos to the local COs that did absolutely nothing about this matter.
Some f@cking stewards huh?

We used to fish a dynamite Walleye lake in the middle of no where. One spring we got their a day before the opener, there was piles of walleye, and pike laying on the shore...enough to fill a few trucks, and whitefish scales everywhere. The lake still hasnt gotten back on its feet since.

You put the rest of the story together ;).

This fall I shot a calf moose, I stopped and talked to some local camp owners in the area, they called the MNR because 3 non-native guys shot 2 cows by the camps (there are 3 cow tags for this entire WMU). The MNR came, confronted the guys, the guys said "oh our buddy ____________ shot these Moose, we're just here for moral support", laughed in the C/O's faces and walked away. The camp owner asked why the C/O wouldnt do anything about it. He said "Im not touching native affairs with a 10 foot pole boys". And went on his way...

Wrong. In Alberta they are classified as a game fish that cannot be treated as disposeable garbage.

Well here in Sask they are raven food the native guys we were fishing with took the liver out of them and cooked them, they taste really good.
We also take the stomach out of the Pike and eat that as well..
