most Reliable and durable handgun ever

It's the toughest one in my collection.

Gotta love the Super Redhawk! Hard to tell from the pic but I assume it is 454 and not 480? Didn't like the factory grips?

You need to do your research about the use of glocks at war. Some "pointy tip" units around the world are using Glock19 now and it’s not because of budget. I didn’t see much 1911 in the recent conflicts, but a lot Sig and Glock and a lot of berettas since they used to be the standard issue pistol of the US Army.

Not taking anything from the 1911 its a proven design, but how many magazines do you need to carry 60 rounds for a 1911 ? Humping a chunk of steel all day thru various terrain gets old real fast along with a lower capacity and the reliance on one mechanical safety when you want to carry loaded. Not a bad gun, just less efficient than other designs in what is called "modern warfare" just like revolvers.

I ‘work overseas and never seen a Glock in a holster of military units - US and European countries.
US Marine and Special Forces use the M45..and I have seen 1911 and of course Berreta 92 and a few Sig 226 - 220 in some unit.

After 5 years of this ( was in the Balkans - Middle East - and most of Africa ) I can say the Glock are not guns that are ‘ military guns ‘ ..not adopted by military at large. That some unit carry it - MP and such, yes but this is not a gun I have seen in conflict zone. Since I have not and nobody seen all conflicts..possible that there is some somewhere.

We are talking durability and longevity..the record of the 1911 and Beretta handgun ( not just the 92) is proven.
I gun model surviving years of military services ( abused and shot a lot ) is in my book - durable !! Lol.

Autos: Glock or CZ75

I did shoot with guy who had over 110,000 through a Grand Power K100 with only a new recoil spring

I wonder how many rounds of .38 special you could shoot through a Ruger GP100 before it wore out.....I expect quite a few.

Had to put a revolver in the mix.

My thoughts too- GP100, Super Redhawk, Blackhawk, Dan Wesson, Freedom Arms will likely last as long, or longer that any auto. S&W 686 and 27 should be up there as well.

People who run rental ranges often have some good insights about durability.

I did too, Afghanistan and Africa and I’ve witnessed plenty of Glock on guys with the blurred face.

The Brits got rid of their junk Browning HP in favour of Glock17 for regular issue along with Dutchs. I wish we could just get those BHP smelted and finally join the rest of the civilized armies with a modern combat pistol.

Off topic, feel free to PM me, I am genuinely interested to hear about your work overseas. Security contract or military ?

The forgotten Browning High Power — still in use in Canada...

Unfortunately... they’ll probably still be around when I retire in 2028, the replacement process starts in 2027. Got it off my docs, that’s how useless those are in a combat application.

I don't know if they're 'still in use'. I mean, they're here. But functional? Not according to borther in-law in the reserves...

They are still in use and functional. There is a big amount of them, brand new in the box, collecting dust in some war reserve warehouse. Their not bad pistol, if you shoot at paper on a flat range but I’d take an extra C8 magazine instead of lugging it around. Good paperweight on a windy day though and perfect to go to and back the DFAC or the Boardwalk which is what they were mainly used for.

A Tech in Mali broke his and he had to hump around the camp with his C7 waiting for a replacement. Boy was he disappointed when a brand new BHP was issued to him, I guess he was expecting a 226... poor guy.

Did the MP get 226 issued lately ? When I left they still had the 225s.

226 in Canada:

-SF
-close protection
-Well connected officer in TF Mali

At a guess here in Cold Lake only, my best estimate last five to ten years. It appears the pilots got a complete issue first and then the MP platoon.

Just my best estimate.

Uhm....I am.confused a bit. It's the Sig Sauer with a single stack mag. Eight rounds.

I know the pilots required a narrower grip for less interference in case of aircraft emergency seat ejection.

One Maple Flag an MP expressed his opinion about merely eight shots in his issue Sig.

Single stack 8 rounds would be 225s. Perfect CCW guns, minus the anemic round capacity. Still miles ahead from the BHP

If reliability & durability are the only criteria, probably some stainless steel single-action revolver (less to go wrong than a double-action revolver), or maybe a TC single-shot pistol in stainless steel (a lot less moving parts than either a revolver or auto)

Definitely not any polymer-framed gun, and very likely not an auto.

If I was going to narrow it down to a few choices before a final decision, these would qualify as my short list.

Wheel-Gun

S&W 686, 28-2 or 629 variant depending on circumstances. I could live with either 4.25 or 6" versions

I'm not an overly a fan of Colt Revolvers, hence leaving them out. Reality is a .38/357 Mag would probably be more then anyone could ask for in terms of practical useage. If I needed to step it up, a .44Mag with the ability to DL .44SP in 29/629 variant would get the call.

Autoloader : 1911 5" (pick your flavour of make/cal)

Hard to argue the 1911's longevity, even with it being picky on ammo at times. I'd personally opt for .45ACP over 9mm, even though the 9 is more common world-wide. With so many makes and models, you could go low frills to high end depending on your budget or who you wanted to impress.
