My factory VARMINT/HEAVY BARREL rifle shoots sub .75" all day! Really? Prove it!

5 Shot group with my Tik-Tac 308

Here are a couple of 5 group shots made @ 100 Meters with my Tik-Tac .308, 20 inch heavy barrel.
Jerry of Mystic Precision sold me a Sightron SIII 8-32 X 56 LRMOA scope which is currently mounted on the Tikka.
The ammo used was Factory Federal Gold Sierra Match King 168 Grain.
I didn't bring an actual measurement with me to the range at the time. However, I do hope the two group shots fall within the requirement of this thread.

Cheers,

Thanks on the heads up Shabazz.
My apologies for overlooking the rules.
I will definitely re-post once I hit the range & get 5X5 shot groups as per thread forum.

If you can get those groups with a truly factory rifle AND factory ammo you'll be king of the hill as far a I'm concerned!

^^^ If that can be continued you should be going for the .5 challenge.

Might need a bedding job. My SPS Varmint had the same problem. Bedding cut the groups almost in half.

Already done. Although I did it myself.

Problem is throughout my load development I was constantly making modifications to the rifle. I also found issues along the way like barrel touching my stock (not when new, but as the aluminum "bedded", etc). Probably not a bad idea to start from square one again. I like the development process. Thinking of dabling in some different bullets too.

I have got a couple PM's from people concerned about the way some people are measuring their groups. Even though it is the way most people measure their groups I figured I would post this pic of the proper way to measure the group. I usually start by turning the target over and folding the holes back into position so that there is I nice defined bullet outline to measure. This is also easier to see when your group is all in the "white". Your calipers should be right on the edge of the black "skid mark" that was left by the bullet. After you measure this extreme spread you then subtract the bullet diameter to get your center to center measurement

I am posting this in all three "challenge" threads to hopefully resolve any group measurement disputes. Thanks Rod

Shibby - that's a really good-looking bedding job you did; well done!

Thanks!

It was a fun project. A bit intimidating at first but I had lots of info to go off with. The bedding itself turned out perfect, but some of it got under my tape and you can see some spots I had to file down where the finish is missing. Most shops hit this area with a sander and you lose all finish and I wanted to prevent that. It doesn't look nearly as bad once the action is assembled.

I used Devcon Steel Putty and Kiwi Shoe Polish (black, couldn't find clear / neutral)

I am actually very curious & looking forward to the challenge. A few months back I shot a rushed four 5 shot groups @ 100 yards with a Hornady Match BTHP 168 grain. See below the pics of the target result taken at the time.

As for the two 5 shot group with the Federal Sierra Match King which I posted earlier was a result of a very well controlled shots.
I will be using Federal for my upcoming 5 group shots & only hope that I will get decent results.

Well, you can tell that people are either having issues, or not trying. I went out today for some more load development since my last day out was HORRIBLE. Pretty much confirmed my load is decent and the guy behind the trigger is the problem. I haven't tried new bullets, but once last 300 AMAX's are spent, I'm trying Hornady Match and SMK's.

Here's the result from today. It's a ladder test but shows both the gun is capable of .5 MOAish, and I am the result of bad groupings. The two groupings 44.4 and 44.5 were shot twice after the initial ladder test to test repeatability. The 44.4 second grouping was a mess, but minus the two fliers and there was potential for repeat. The 45.5 was much the same with the obvious low shot being out of line.

Looks like I know where work needs to be done...

I was shooting prone with bi-pod and rear bag. Cut line with 10" of snow. Position wasn't great but I'm done making excuses =)

I'll post mine again, this time I guess it should count! All results in MoA.

Savage 12 .223rem 7" twist, action bedded otherwise stock. Scopes used were Sightron SIII 8-32x56 FCH, Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP, and now a SWFA 5-20x50 FFP. Some of the following were shot with a 2 piece rest, some on the 1-piece. All groups picured are part of my extensive load development involving 700 rounds. Because this is all from load development, I thought I'd add some targets that had 1 group open up as well.

Smallest Average: 0.42 MoA (Lapua 77 1 July 2012 & Berger 80 1 July 2012)
Smallest Group: 0.12 MoA (Lapua 77 1 July 2012)

I had 15 rounds of Federal Gold Medal laying around, so I figured I'd see if I should give this a shot. The other holes are from .223 we were shooting earlier.

Last photo was my first group, first round was the far left bottom. Fouling shot and I only had 15rds after all.

Shot at 100m, gives me groups of .493, .594, and .444 MOA.
Magic 8-ball says "Yes". Just need to buy a couple of boxes and do it all officially.

Rifle is Rem700 SPS, bedded into a Choate tactical with MPod and rear bag.

Just remember when you go for your official attempt that all your groups are on the same paper and ONLY those groups. All the requirements are in the original post.

I'm somewhat confused. What caliber were you shooting and how were you measuring?

Or are you making compensations of being at 100m and not yards?
