My rifle shoots 1/2" groups @100 yards all day! Really? Prove it.

hey take this to the rimfire forum and figure it out..........less chatter and more centerfire group pictures............

thank you.......

lol, you friggin elitist!!!! Your killing my buzzzzzzz. I was preparing a flood of 70's era insults to throw out like a monkey flings stool after I got this right. Now your saying I have to get back in the short bus. CRAP!

I've been working on doing this with a 17 HMR. I bought it so I wouldn't have to stop shooting as the Great Pawn Fest of 2012/2013 continues. I have no doubt this thing will shoot 1/2 MOA or better at 100 M. A 3" disc at 200 M is too easy. The second 10 shot group I fired at 100 yards was an eye opener.

rodauto - It looks like your PPC has some real potential to be an outstanding shooter! It's too bad you didn't meet the challenge but I wouldn't worry about. Play with your loads a little and you'll get there. The reason perhaps for the difference in groups size from now compared to your first experience could be caused by a few variables and definitely caused by others. If the rifle was shooting well on a cold miserable winter day why would you expect the load to perform equally on a mild pleasant spring day? If the rifle was in tune when you shot your groups in November it definitely was not when you shot the above groups. You said you didn't read the wind... Starting your group with the wind coming from one direction and finishing with the wind from the other can easily explain some of the groups you posted. When trying to reel in a .500 group down to a .250 group that your rifle can obviously produce, one needs to keep that rifle in tune and dope the wind properly. That can only be done effectively by wind flags. I agree with the saying that load development without wind flags is a waste of time. Except for the people out there who's bullets are traveling too fast or are too heavy to be affected by the wind. Man I wish I could buy some of those bullets! Keeping the rifle in tune means loading for the current conditions. This is why BR shooters load at the range before each target to "chase" the tune based on notes taken and what their previous target tells them. I know that is not practical for this challenge but I believe with a little practice that rifle of yours will shoot 1/4" groups all day long! Take what you think is your most consistent powder charge for any given condition and play with the seating depth and see what happens. Either start with bullet just touching the lands or with the bullet jammed into lands and adjust from there. Good luck!

Thanks hend238, when I was using my old Sako 6mm ppc I expected the fliers were due to a worn barrel as I can see a lot of throat erosion. Now that I have the new gun I need a whole new set of excuses!! Lots of fun and learning a lot. (I think)

Rodauto - if you check posts 251 / 252 you will see that the stock part of your "old ppc... in the sako stock" met this challenge. Thanks for selling it to me:) Ian Robertson bedded a Barnard V-block and chambered a couple of barrels, including the 30BR used to meet this challenge. Small world, fancy meeting you here!

Hi JEC,
Damn thats a nice looking stock! Although the action and the barrel is what really sets it off!! Nice shooting.

I started the thread and it has specific guidelines. I have put in a lot of time trying to keep it going in the proper direction and not get side tracked.

52 pages and staying on track is an Internet win. You are obviously doing a good job I would say! Ill take proper targets later and join in .... Correctly lol.

Not sure if this is OK, but I used the same rifle with which I met the 300M CHALLENGE and stepped down to 100M. Had to chase a couple of groups as the first shot went low. Still not back to warm weather groups, but April 4th east of Edm is still pretty snowy and was -3C this AM.
Groups are .31 / .39 / .29 / .43 / .38" shot at 100M. Agg is .36"
Rifle is Barnard S action, short BR Krieger barrel, CG trigger, Reiben stock... Chambered to 30BR. Smith - Karl Schmidt

Nice shooting JEC. I will put it in the original post. What caliber is it?

Hey guys,

Been reading on this site for a few years, just started posting today.

Ive read most of this thread but dont have time honestly to sieve through it all right now.

My question is has anyone attempted this with .338 Lapua?

If not I will pull mine out and attempt it this saturday... Just have to find me a proper calliper....

No guarantees Ill nail it saturday as I havent had my bolt gun out in about a year. Ill get it with a bit of a warm up and get it on here for you guys soon.

Also, are you guys including your CCB in your first group or warming up first?

Definitely no 338 Lapua yet. Can't wait to see how you do.

Its not going to be easy dont get me wrong! I havent measured any groups very accurately at close range but I did put 3 rounds inside a toonie just farting around last time I had it out. Factory ammo, Factory Sako, Prone position using only a bi pod so its doable. Id post a pic but...

A) I dont know how :)
B) It was an actual toonie so I dont know how well that will go over....

That's fine about the pic. We are trying to keep all the attempts to follow the guidelines in the original post.
