My Schultz & Larsen M69 -- UPDATED with an easy reference list of TRADEEX rifles

Gee! 100 yards with Diopter Sight?! That's amazing! How old are your eyes?

40 yrs....and out of practice for the last 4 or 5 years lol. I'd be happier with that group if it was 200 yards, still got some room to improve. First time loading with H4831 as well, but I think the gun likes it. I shot some Privi out of a scoped 96 sporter today too and thought the scope was busted....5 inch groups with the 139gr soft point. Handloads printed around an inch, so I guess Privi is only good for the brass....terrible ammo lol.

Pray tell, what are the load details?

Got mine out for a shoot today....bore was rated "good to very good". First 5 round group with it zeroed, my own loads....100 yards.

Rifle isn't bedded and those were full sized brass....next go with neck sized brass should be a bit better.

I have similar rifle, what are your load details, that group is more than good enough for me. Also, where did you purchase your target?

Thanks!

Yeah, that has me beat to! lol
I am shooting factory Prvi, and perhaps this brand of ammo isn't very good?

We don't have much for factory options...but the Prvi blue box 139sp was possibly the most inaccurate ammo I ever shot lol.
My first 6.5 was this sporter I got from Tradex, just wanted a rough backup hunting gun that I didn't have to load for. I looked through the dozens of rifles and picked this '96 that had a new med/heavy barrel added, d&t, sporter stock, looked like someone spend some money on it so I figured it would be accurate. Was only $250 iirc. Added a beat up CG stock that was nicely bedded, and did a grind to fit pad myself to pretty it up a bit, refinished the stock lightly. Well it shot terrible, 5" groups routinely....bad enough that I bought dies, and now I'm loading for yet another cartridge which I didn't want to do lol. Turns out it shoots great with the same handloads, under an inch, so it's good to go for ground hogs or moose and everything in between.
So I'd definitely try other ammo...S&B, or even Remington core-loct....I always had good results with those.

And I find the S&L stocks to be much more comfortable shooting them the CG....But I love the old '96 actions simplicity and smoothness you only get with #### on close.

Lebarons or SAIL.....one if those places, can't recall, but I could see the orange center at 100y pretty easy.
I was using 2 grains under max for this load here, but subbed in Win magnum primers, Amax for the bullets ....I use mag primers with ball powders and slow powders like this...

Just click select cartridge and it will show the load.

Finally shot mine, a Spandau, all matching from weimajack. Quite nice. I got 2" groups with PRVI ball, , first time with diopter sight, so I was pretty happy. I've ordered some bullets for reloading. Questions:

1. Trigger not that good, does one try to improve it or is there (there must be I guess) a drop in replacement trigger?

2. Are these so historic that putting a scope on it would send me to bubba hell?

Tips for getting the most out of this toy?

Thanks guys.

I put a Timney trigger in mine. Very nice!! Don't give up on the Danish diopter sight, Prvi ball is crap for accuracy in 6.5x55. 2" groups are what I get with that stuff as well. Once you reload you will see a significant improvement. Not everything is collectible... and these are not. Modify as you see fit, though I personally will not drill my receiver.

My practical and cosmetic mods are:
recrown
rechamber
glass bed action
Tinmey trigger
all metal bead blasted, parkerized and Arma-coated
bolt polished
stock refinished

What part of the trigger pull do you not like? Does it have a standard 98 trigger or one of the S&L adjustable versions? If it's the 2 stage pull you don't like then aftermarket like Timney/Bold/Jewell etc are your only real option. If you are OK with 2 stage and have the S&L trigger it can be adjusted nicely. Military trigger can be worked on a bit but not much.
D&T will involve bending/replacing bolt handle, notching out stock, and will reduce value considerably. A scope won't net you any better results then you are already getting. Handloading will squeeze a little more out of it though.

2 stage pull trigger. I can deal with it I hope. Thanks for the advice, I've ordered a box of Hornady 140gr Amax and hpbt match bullets to play with first. Now to find a target that works with these sights.

Try one of these....

Changing from portrait to landscape makes it a bit smaller.
Bunch more here.

Looks gorgeous, have been thinking of this kind of set up for a while.
what base do you use?
Does the bolt handle clear the scope easily?
What height scope rings do you use?
Thanks,

Thanks,

Those are Recknagel pivot mounts, they allow for complete removal and remounting of the optic without losing zero!

Thanks,

I used 30 mm Recknagel rings and bases, those are, but I am not sure, 17 mm high rings. Clears bolt and safety nicely.
I was looking for solution that will enable me to use peep site and scope interchangeably. This is the only setup that allows me to do that.
It is costly but worth every penny. I will be getting another set of rings so I can use long range scope on her. That way I will have 3 rifles in one.
It doesn't get better than that.
Off-course some mods are necessary to achieve all this. You need to bend bolt, drill and tap and modify peep site base.
Schwenkmontage requires knowledge not all north American gunsmith have. There are some particulars and if they omit them you end up with stress induced point that will not guaranty zero every time. Done properly will empower you to use multiple scopes on same platform regardless.

Here's one I finally finished.....it was a complete rifle sans stock. Has a great looking bore so I'm hopeing it's a shooter.

Barreled receiver for this one...Czech bolt, German receiver, and a Danish barrel....and it headspaced just fine lol.
I'll probably just skim bed it, but I'll shoot it first to see how it prints.
Still have another one to build up....might open it up to 6.5-284, or rebarrel to 7.5x55 not sure yet.

Best diameter bull for this diopter?

Hi.-

Find a target with solid black center, just to fill the front sight aperture at 100 yards, leaving a small white space all around when you will see thru the front sight aperture.

Take your sights, and skeeze gently the trigger.

You will made a better group than at 50 yards.

Best 100meter bull size, tried 6" bullseye yesterday, way too small at 100 meters. thanks!
