New 358 Win Improved

I have a similar beast done up, it's a 350 Rem mag stainless 77MKII, barrel chopped to 19 inches, Limbsaver pad, 3lb trigger, with an older Bushnell Scopechief on it. First trip to the range put 3 shots in a 2" group, at 200 yds! (witnessed by a local LEO, he couldn't believe it, so I handed him the gun, he shot 2 1/4" at 200, was quite suprised!) With Rem factory 200gr ammo yet. Recoil wasn't even all that bad. I'm working on 2 loads for it, a all around Barnes triple shock 200gr and a moose thumper Speer 250gr. Very inpressed with how it handles, shoulders and shoots. Nice guns indeed.

I never said the 185TTSX was a 500y bullet ;) 200gr Accubond would get there (1800 fps @ 500y), 225gr Accubond the same. 210gr Scirocco..215gr Sierra GameKing BTSP, 225gr SST

Actually, I'm thinking the TTSX will open at 1800fps.
If you think about it (I'm sure you have) the little runt is an impressive package for 99.99% of all hunting shots.

Though the longer bullets are better at long range, given the intended function of your setup you might be hard pressed to beat the 185/200TTSX.

I do know a guy that has some 265TTSXs if you need some! :p

I read over and over that Barnes TSX bullets won't open reliably below 2000fps.

Where does this knowledge come from?

There is a picture on the barnes website that shows different bullets shot through 1" of ballistic Gelatin and backed with a thin aluminium sheet at approx. 2000fps. The Barnes bullets where the only ones that opened/mushroomed properly.

So why does everyone think that the accubonds and others will mushroom/open at lower velocities than the Barnes?

I have search the web for info on this and can't come up with anything? Have I missed something along the way?

By the way nice setup Mr. Bartell, should make a great hunting rig!!!

I look forward to another elk hunting video this fall.

Best of luck.

A TTSX might open fully at 1800 fps, more so than a TSX due to the point acting like a wedge. I have a box of 185gr TTSX here, and should have some 200gr Accubonds by the time the gun gets back from the smith. Nosler does claim 1800 fps for expansion with the Accubond and I believe them.

Cool!

I did not know that about the Accubond.

It is my fav in my light 338Edge...To bad I can't get any! :p

That is why my bullet of choice for my 21" barreled T/C Contender carbine in 375JDJ is the .473 BC 260gr Accubond.

They are the only .375" bullet available that with a muzzle velocity of 2300fps and just over 1800fps @ 300 yards turns this extremely accurate little cannon into a 300 yard deer/bear/elk/moose combo...

to better exploit the long range capability of the 358 Win Improved, I ordered a Vx3 2.5-8x36mm Boone & Crockett and three boxes of 200gr Accubonds. Can't wait to get shooting!

just got the call from the gunsmith, it's ready to be shipped back! Trigger at 2.5 lbs :D Big thanks to Greg @ Rocky Mountain Rifles for the speedy turnaround!

I'm interested to see how the B&C works out, and at what distances...Be sure to post results.

I have Winchester mod 88 in 358 Win in Boyds laminate stock and it is a perfect rifle for my kind of hunting, nothing needs to be improved. With caseful of TAC and 200gr Rem CL bullet I am getting 2600fps out of 20" barrel and close to 1" groups at 100m. While bush hunting, the second magazine filled with 250gr Spears GS gives me the peace of mind. Why should I "improve" the proven champion?

A friend of mine has a pair of 88's, one in 284 and the other in 358 Win. You're right, nothing shabby about the 358 Win.

I'm so lost... How did a neutered .338 suddenly get bumped up in size and is supposedly competing with the 358's? Did I miss something?

Here's the secret you missed Hansol.
The 338 drops the Moose where it stands while the 358s and 375 Taylors pick the poor moose up and toss it in the nearest pond as per your avatar.:)

The exception is the 9.3, Moose fall as though pole axed right where they stood and don't even try to move after. But that as Hammy Hamster would say is another story...... :D
