New M-14 range report FAIL

Probably not with the naked eye. You'd probably have to take it apart and run the parts through an NDT shop.

If yours is working just keep shooting it. Given the number of M305 circulating around and only two of such stories now then I'd say you're probably good.

Thanks Starstream,

That sounds similar to my expectations (I cannot say that I'm familiar with "NDT"). I won't be losing sleep before firing my M305 again, but I'll be sure to wear extra eye protection and use commercial ammo the first time I shoot a shorty should I pick one up.

Folks have short memories 'round these parts. Here is what happened to my m305 on the first rnd, circa 2005.

Same thing happened to a friend of mine and his ca. 2007 M14S. He took some truly terrible photos with his cell phone and sent the rifle back, so I never got to take a good look at it to get an idea of what may have happened. I don't think the story was posted to this forum at all.

I wasn't here in '05. What was the final verdict in why your barrel broke in the same place? Would you ever own another?

Although this kind of thing happens from time to time with most firearms manufacturers. Even high end ones like SAKO and their Finnlite fiasco. They are pretty rare and most people shouldnt worry as long as their wearing proper safety gear that is. However from my experience there are far more problems with Chinese maufactured firearms so, your risk is higher with them. My guess is this is due to less stringent safety regulations, inadequate training, and quality control measures in China as compared to North America and Europe. This is part of the reason these firearms are so cheap. You get what you pay for and I myself stay away from Norinco garbage. I am not saying I will never own one but, most of the time I would rather just save up longer and get a gun from a more reputable manufacturer. Better resale value, better safety margin, better fit and finish, better reliability, and better accuracy most of the time. Just my opinion of course.

There never is verdict, you just send it back. I would have owned another one but that was back during the dry spell when there were none to be had. Came close to getting another but never pulled the trigger on one since.

I will just had that I would have another one, its just that theres a ciuple of guns that jump in front of the m14 on my prioraty list!

My Shorty did exactly the same thing on the 4th round before Xmas. It appeared to me that the there was cracking in the barrel from the factory installation. I had no problems with returning to rifle to the dealer. Was shooting Remmington FMJ ammo.
