I remember a flood of Maks hitting the market in the mid-nineties down in the States, where I was at the time.
They ran pretty well. At one point I was hitchhiking down there and a guy who picked me up, after chatting for a few hours as we drove, commented that he had a gun under the seat, but "don't freak out." I reached down and pulled it out...Makarov. They were about $200 at the time and the sights were all a bit goofy...high and right on every single one IIRC. I told him so and he was pretty surprised to hear that response, rather than "holy f**k a gun". We drove along taking potshots at stuff once in a while - we were in the middle of nowhere in a desert state with a pretty relaxed attitude towards guns so I don't think we were breaking any laws, and judging by the road signs, we definitely weren't doing anything unusual in that area.
I've often thought of that guy, and the fact that he offered up a loaded gun to a hitchhiker after a couple of hours of conversation. I am sure he regretted it after I shot him and stole his car and went on a cross-country rampage, of course...but for the first bit, before my psychosis kicked in, we had a really nice time.
In all seriousness, I shot maybe half a dozen of them back then because they were cheap and available. All the ones I had my hands on were pretty solid little machines. I would consider buying one again just out of nostalgia for the hitchhiking guy.
