New to PCC, need advice on scope

for what it's worth, I have a red dot on my PCC, and a LPVO on my type81, specifically the primary arms nova. the nova is great as it gives you the flexibility of more magnification and you still get red dot bright. and because of the bright illumination you dont have to be directly behind the scope to use it. the PCC has a red dot for weight savings, but honestly, I could use the lpvo and get the same results.
For what it's worth? Well a lot because you're the first one with hands-on experience on the PA LPVO that's tempting me so thank you very much for your comment. I think it's great to have the red dot and magnification in one scope. Yes it's a tad heavier but you kind of get the best of both worlds. And it can always be used on a different rifle too. Thanks!

Well I just read again all the comments posted on my thread. It seems clear to me that most of you recommended a red dot over something with magnification. I did steer the conversion towards LPVO's but that was on me well mostly. If I want to learn which I do and I'm not afraid to say so, I'm new to this PCC thing, then I should listen... I've learn a lot and realize I couple of things I wasn't aware of, like you don't use a PCC to shoot at 300 yards... Ya I'm this new. But I'm excited to take on this new hobby with my son and I want to thank everyone for chipping in to help me with my decision.

So I'm gonna go with a PA prism 1x.
There's two models that have been discussed, SLx 9mm Gemini and GLx. Seems like the GLx is worth paying a tad more and get the newest technology. But is it better than one that is 9mm dedicated like the SLx? I don't understand enough to make the right decision here, any explanation would be appreciated!

Cheers guys

That’s a solid choice. Prisms are great with/without battery, and provide a cleaner sight picture to me than a red dot. Primary arms make solid products of better quality than many of their similarly priced competitors. Can always add an inexpensive magnifier down the road if you feel you need more magnification.

The GLX is a step up from the SLX range (reads as Gold versus Silver). Presuming the reticle is the same shape, the only difference between a 5.56, 9mm or 7.62 reticle are the hold overs calibrated into the reticle. It’s nice to have a reticle matching your specific calibre, but the holdovers may or may not be accurate to your particular rifle/ammo choice anyway.

I’ve not seen the new GLX prism, but the SLX model is a good quality optic.

All that to say, I don’t think you’ll go wrong with either the SLX (with 9mm reticle) or the GLX (with 5.56 or other reticle)

Thanks!
So the hold overs you are talking about, the difference you get from a 5.56 and a 9mm would be in the calibration. And because it's a 1x, it does not affect it too much? But it would if it was a 5x let's say? Sorry I'm just trying to understand better. Maybe I should try to find a video that explains what is a caliber dedicated scope! Thanks again much appreciated.

Yep, thats pretty much correct.

Some food for thought when it comes to reticles, it may be designated for "9mm" or "5.56" but in theory it could be incorrect even for the correct cartridge as you would need to completely replicate the ammo and gun that was used to setup the reticle in the first place.

Example:

9mm 124gr moving at 1200 FPS will have much different drop characteristics than 147gr moving at 850 FPS but both are 9mm.

Or 55gr 5.56 in a 20" barrel vs 75gr 5.56 in a 14" barrel.

I am sure you get where I am going with this. Either version will work, the holdovers may be unique to your setup but with a little testing (simply shoot at various distances and see where you hit then compensate with holdovers) you can easily figure it out.

Top tip, keep good data when doing this or you can chase your tail which is very frustrating.

Thank you for the explanation, it makes a lot of sense when I read it. It is subjective indeed and I can see that now. I will take good note when it's time, thanks for the advice!

Exactly right, you will figure out which holdovers work for your rifle/ammo choice. They may not match the manufacturers recommendations in the manual. That remains true whether you go with a 9mm, 5.56 or 7.62 reticle. If you change bullet weight or any other variable, the POI will vary and may not match the holdovers included in the reticle.
Even if you buy an optic with a 9mm reticle, as you change ammo type, the holdovers you were using at 100yards with a 115gr load will be different to a 124gr load etc.

Like Sniffer said, keeping good notes specific to your rifle/optic/ammo weight/brand will help you out down the road and save you a little hair.

Thank you for all that information and taking the time to educate me on the subject. I've got lots to learn so that's appreciated. I'll do tests and take notes, it's going to be fun. I ordered a whole bunch of ammo at a great price thanks to you. Now I just need the PCC to show up and decide on the prism. There's no ETA on the GLx, I asked. I might just settle down the SLx 9mm specific!

No worries mate, you’re going to have a fine rig and I’m envious! So long as it stays legal 🤞 I’m sure you and your son will have a lot of fun for a long while 👍

Thank you kindly! Ya, I hope it stays legal, it's a leap of faith and I want to encourage a Canadian company as well. I originally wanted to buy an R18, the new one MK3 I think was about to come out and got postponed for now. Hence the R9 for me but also cost of ammo guided me towards 9mm. Anyways it is what it is and I hope things changes. Thanks for all your help, truly appreciated!

Well I pulled the trigger on the PA SLx 1x Gemini 9mm in green. Had a great service at Marstar. The GLx has no ETA and seems like either are a good choice so I got that one. Thanks all for your advices, that was super informative and helpful, much appreciated!

Well I got it and it's definitely a neat thing! Thanks to all of you who guided me towards this. I had no knowledge about prism, green illumination or even Marstar which I received a great service from John. So ya, success! Thanks
