Looking at the possibility of hunting deer in the future. I want a nice tacticool rifle to do it, but also I know that 556/223 isn't allowed (in Ontario anyways).. So I'm looking for something in the 6mm or more caliber which would put me in the .243 to .30 range, or 6mm to 7.62mm.. I'm cool with 6.5 grendel or 6.8mm as well.

Any advice from tacticool deer hunters here?

Thanks

I used my rob XCR with good results last year for a buck and a doe. I wouldn't push the 762 39 too far(I kept it under 150 yards) but they went down well.

Also, the Kel-Tec RFB could be a good choice.

Or convert a .223 black rifle to .300 AAC Blackout (or something like 6.8SPC ACR non-restricted barrel & bolt) :D

[edit]Oh, forgot the FNH FNAR .308![/edit]

You need to check your regs again. Ontario is one of the provinces that does allow deer hunting with .223. I've hunted with a Tavor in the past. Got a nice buck. Walked 5 strides and collapsed.

You're allowed to hunt large game with any centre-fire cartridge in Ontario.

I'd go with the CZ 858 in 7.62x39 with 123 grain soft points from Sellier & Bellot.

Price is really the determining factor here...

On the lower end; Jager is correct, CZ858, as are newshot & traveler who suggested the M14...

Stepping it up in price would get you into the XCR-M, Tavor etc...

Cheers

Thanks! Wasn't sure what was out there for this application.. I know a 223 is plenty for deer, especially a well placed shot. But I guess a bigger round would be best.

Are you pushing bush or sit hunting? If you're sitting, any shot you take should be a well placed shot. Pushing bush, not so much...

I definintely wouldn't be sitting.. I'd be stalking / seeking; a nature walk with a purpose if you will.

Up to now, the most realistic is the CZ858 pricewise, but I REALLY like the XCR.. The KelTec RFB definitely has the bullpup merit as well! Probably best for when I'm walking in teh thick brush..

What's out there in between the CZ858 and the Bushmaster price-wise? Calibers can be anything between 6mm and 7.62.. I guess I could also look at the 5.56/223 variants.. If there is no rule against it in ontario, I could go for a well placed shot with a 223.. Non-Restricted btw..

Thanks

Non-Restricted, between the CZ 858 and a (non-restricted) Bushmaster ACR?

XCR-L
XCR-M
Swiss Arms full size rifles
Mini-14
Mini-30
I've seen Minis chambered in 6.8 SPC on the EE...not sure if they were custom or a factory offering
Keltec RFB

pretty well whatever your heart desires if that's your budget. There's not much out there that's more expensive than a non-restricted ACR right now. If you're a true gun nut, you'll end up with everything that gets recommended to you anyway :p

Ruger made the Mini in 6.8 for a couple of years. I think they discontinued it in 2011 or 2012.
