Why do folks continue to call this a $170 gun.
The pkg is $499, the gun is typically $350, the ammo $329. Apply proportional discount, not the stupid full price for ammo, rest to pistol. Canadian are really bad at math.
You're not alone Burnaby - I also ordered on the 24th of April and received my CFO reg in the mail today and still no word from CanAm...

Technically, Malda, it's not a slide RELEASE, but a slide STOP. To properly chamber a round, one inserts a loaded magazine and pulls back on the slide itself.
To cycle the slide manually, remove the magazine, and pull back on the slide, the slide STOP will drop out of the way. I don't recommend allowing the slide
to "slam home" on an empty chamber, but a lot of people do it anyway. That's why I refuse to purchase a used 1911.

Oh - you may enjoy the parts breakdown listed here:

.
...and Grammar!? Burnaby British Columbia right?
Malda - recoil buffer is an aftermarket part. Stock 1911A1 don't have no wimpy buffers...
so does this thing even really need a buffer?
Karl, sound advice! my bad for calling it a slide release, what you describe does make me realize I should never opt to use the stop to release the slide but instead just do as I would on my M&P and slingshot it but only with a loaded mag. What sort of damage might be caused by allowing the slide to slam forward on an empty chamber?
You want another 2673 posts in this thread ? the jury is out on buffers!![]()
Malda, thank you for not taking any offense at my comment - none was intended! I've seen a lot of people just use the stop as a release, and seen quite a few failures to feed because
of that method. Slingshotting gives the slide the proper impetus to pick up and chamber a round, especially when the firearm is dirty. I've been collecting and shooting for more than
40 years now, and was introduced quite a while before that! LOL Anyway, what my old firearms instructor told me MANY years ago was that allowing the slide to slam home without
a cartridge (or dummy) to buffer the impact would eventually cause unnecessary wear on the slide and frame. I never argued with him. Naturally as robust as it is, , the 1911 CAN
take a lot of abuse, but I like to "baby" mine. Of course, opinions vary, and some claim it does no harm, and I wish them well. I just won't do it on MY firearm!
RECOIL BUFFER??? John M. didn't include one in his glorious design! There are dozens of modern modifications that CAN be done to reduce recoil, but for most shooters
they're not necessary. Is the recoil of a .45 that bad? I don't think so. I love these examples for what they are: almost 100% clones of a 1911A1 Government Issue.
They are also a GOOD platform to build upon if you want a customized competition gun.
I certainly hope you enjoy your new 1911!!!
(that's what REALLY matters!)

I'm just glad to be learning. This is my first 1911 and it's only my 3rd handgun purchase. As a whole I'm really new to firearms as I just started a few years ago but even then didn't really go shooting regularly until just a few months ago. For these reasons (and me being super novice to this hobby) it has been a bit confusing with all the choices out there. The 1911 just seems to be way different compared to all the polymer framed pistols I see at the range majority of the time I am out. I have fired a 1911 about 3 years ago and I immediately liked it but they've always just been far too pricey for me to get into, this deal from CanAm sure made it easier to get a 1911.
As for upgrades, I really don't understand what to change on this pistol as I haven't used it yet to decide what I would change. As far as aesthetics go, I really would like the extended thumb safety and even an extended mag release plus the skeleton hammer and beavertail grip safety. Do these really affect the performance of the weapon? I'm going to guess, not really. But I assume some sort of a trigger kit or a trigger job will help as would possibly a one piece full guide rod.
Another thing mentioned was dehorning and even polishing some of the internals, but again, these things I wouldn't do unless I had some sort of tutorial showing me exactly what needed to be done and how.
