Norinco JW-15A Compact Hiker New Arrival

So I guess that Norinco is still making civilian sporting rifles. I always thought that these Norinco 22s were left overs from the 1990s made for the US market before the Chinese import ban. I really wish that Canadian importers would now import other Chinese rifles that we haven't seen before. For instance if Norinco had a 22 magnum version of this short rifle I would buy it in an instant. We used to also import Chinese competition 22 lrs that were really interesting and accurate. Alot more care was taken in the accessories that you got with the rifle compared to American or European rifles. I would pay $600 for something like that easily.

For example:

Nased on what people have said about rough machine work this new batch was made with the same endmills and cutters from the 90's

So to me it looks like the NR-15 is Norincos newer version of the JW-15. I assume that the tooling would be newer. But I really can't tell the difference I wish there was more info. They should bring in the 22 magnum versions of the NR-15 too. Anyone have experience with the NR-15?

I bought one many years ago, but it's nice to see they still ship them the same way as they did back then :)

As others have already pointed out, the trigger is pretty rough, and the action is far from smooth. But mine shoots ridiculously well with a wide range of ammo. That said, I didn't buy it as a target rifle -- it lives on the back of my quad. I've long since lost count of the number of grouse it's put in the pot -- but it keeps our 4-man moose camp in chicken tenders every year until we get a moose or two on the meat pole.

It's short and handy, stores just about anywhere, and knocks the heads off bird very reliably out to 50 yards or so. I seldom head into the fall woods without it.
Bingo! And I think one of the first things I said about the rifle was that it looks like someone put the rifle in the bag, then poured a cup of melted butter in the same bag. Literally pooling. lol

But yeah, in 2025 this is still a very good value and I welcome the notion of having a sh*t kicker 22LR bolt action again. Don't need to check the forecast. lol

Thanks, everyone, for sharing your experiences and feedback!

We’re keeping an eye on this thread and really appreciate your thoughts. Your suggestions help us communicate with the manufacturer to improve and even innovate on existing models.

If there’s anything specific you’d like to see—whether it’s upgrades, a .22 Magnum version, or other tweaks—let us know! Your input makes a difference.

Looking forward to more ideas from you all!

Are these actually still in production and recent models?
A turned down bolt for better scope clearance would be nice.... sounds like getting the sights and barrel indexed to the receiver might be worth looking at as well?

You should try to import a 22 magnum version then you can undercut all the other 22 magnum bolt actions available by a lot. I think that most of the competotors have 22 magnum bolt actions selling at around $600 as a starting point. How do you get in contact with Norinco for ordering something like this?

Since you're asking...and assuming major changes can't happen/stick with the platform...

A 22WMR version would be something I'd consider for sure provided the pricing for a basically a different chamber doesn't double the price. The magazines on both of my previous JW-15 backpackers were not great, but CZ compatibility is the winning option anyway. I'd strongly suggest a 22WMR version be offered in a slightly longer barrel length to retain some of the velocity advantage. Perhaps even 18" long, but otherwise same stock/receiver/barrel type/finish. Better irons (but still kept low) would be great but again, not if it drives the cost up. 1/2 the charm of these is the fact that they're budget guns, and can be subjected to a lot. Mine were!

Most of us can find justification to buy something that represents such good value.

My bolt will NOT go in. Can someone please confirm that this much of the sear is meant to stick out when the trigger is literally pinned against the receiver?

Not a great start. The machining is some of the worst I've ever seen. The mags feel like sand going in the magwell.

That is how mine looks when pushing the trigger forward yeah. Sear is visible like that.

But the sear drops fully down when the trigger is depressed.

I just need to have the bolt handle rotated (which in itself took a good while of work, see my previous comment) and the trigger depressed for the bolt to slide in.

I think you misunderstand me. That IS with the trigger pressed fully, resulting in the sear getting stuck against the receiver slot and stays projected ~3mm. The bolt has a ~0.75mm deep clearence groove on the center.

My rear trigger guard screw also arrived stripped... Took the two action screws out the the third one just came out.

Just checking, but are you holding the trigger back when your trying to insert the bolt?

Interesting. When I depress the trigger the sear goes down a little more than yours.

Your first photo does not look like how the trigger/sear assy should be when depressed however. The screw should slide along the receiver (see my photo one). Not be floating (photo two). Should only look like photo 2 if you push forward on the trigger.

The trigger is being pressed to its limit - the sear is literally jamming against the receiver slot as it attempts to retract, away from the boreline.

I have to push on the linkage arm if i want to reset it.

Uploading a video now. Appreciate the quick responses

You don't happen to be missing a screw spring underneath the linkage arm (on the front) do you?

Is your first photo of you pulling the trigger? Because that is not how it should look if you are. The linkage arm should pivot on the trigger.

When I recreate your first photo, the sear indeed does not drop down far enough.

If that is how your trigger is operating when being pressed, there is a fault. Perhaps in the pivot of the linkage arm and the trigger.

Hard agree re. The machining quality. Definitely gonna take quite a bit of polishing to smooth things out. My rear sight is also cockeyed, but I intend on picking up a peep at some point anyway. The smallest screw on my trigger guard came pre marred and is almost impossible to remove. Gonna have to look for a replacement...

Here's a video.

Tenda, please contact me about a return. I called and it just rang until the call dropped.
I don't find this acceptable. It's literally nonfunctional like this. I must've got a Friday afternoon gun and got hit by tolerance stack.
