Norinco NS522 build: NEW MAG RELEASE

Well finally got some range time with mine

So, I have been wanting a trigger shoe for the Eggroll for awhile now and I do own a few commercial ones, but I wanted one that was totally flat and not beveled on the leading edges. Im sure they exist, but that would have been boring of me to go that route. Right!? Last pic is of it mounted, but not on the Eggroll, as she is in many pieces at the moment. I fitted it to a trigger that has a similar size and shape so you get the idea. As usual, I wanted this to be do able by anyone with hand tools, so all I used was a hacksaw and a sharp new file and a few smaller jewellers files, 400, 800 and 1000g wet dry paper. The set screws ( 4 of the tiny buggers!) are standard 4.07s. It actually started life as round bar stock (its all I had) and I shaped it down by hand. I still have to go shooting with it on and get a final feel for it before I finish the last bit of sculpting. and of course - finishing the edges and shorten the set screws to sit flush, so in these pics it isnt 100% done. Oh, and it took me about 4ish hours over a few days when I had time.

I have been eyen em up but have way too many rimfires now. I bought that Tula MU 12 a few weeks ago but haven't had the chance to shoot it. Have to make a scope rail for it to attach to the side mount so I can see what it can really do. My eyes and peeps have issues sometimes.
I am also doing a modification on my eggroll to use another manufacturer's magazine. Have one hole to drill and tap and then some pictures will be posted. Easy change over just not sure on cost. Will look into that to. I had the parts laying around and tripped on the idea by accident.

Ooooo! Cant wait!!

I am a sucker for old peeps on .22s and the S&L fits that bill perfect. I have a couple models, but none have been scoped as of yet. Well, Im building one up now as a test rig to shoot informal BR. Err, I hope to anyway. I have had a few Tulas over the years and they are sweet shooters, but very, very utilitarian. Kinda like a Lada.

hurry up and post up your mag results! Im getting older by the minute.

Snowy Fun

Took mine out to the snow this morning, went for my snowshoe hike and at the end went to my berm did some quick plinking. Ran up to 50 yards shooting standing at reduced IDPA steel plate, then prone shooting at the "dura-seal" star. Moved back to 100 then 150 gradually, covering my "retreat" so to speak. :)

It is fun to get used to hitting the white fluffy deck prone with a bolt action 22, more small things to pay attention to than on dry ground. But at the same time more flexible since I can adjust the snow a bit for my elbows etc. Reloading and rundowns in snowy conditions also requires extra care. The cross wind wasn't bad, around 7km full strength, had to dial it in once I moved farther back.

Photo of gun is from this morning, the others are from last week when I took a semi-auto-black-thingy out, but just to give a feel of what it is like. Like I said before, not quite up to par when compared to many of you folks' excellent precision and gunsmith skills, just a different kind of casual fun to keep me semi-active.

I finally finished reading all 146 pages of this thread (shame that Photobucket does not display most photos). What an amazing informative thread, you guys inspired me to purchase an NS522 (which I did off EE) and it is currently in my safe (thanks for all your contributions).

I have cleaned out all the packing grease as well as individual components and have lightly polished the trigger (haven't replaced the trigger spring yet). Shame about the stock, I would like to replace it but don't believe Boyds, McMillan or Richard Microfit carry suitable replacements. Anyone have any experience changing the NS522 stock?

There have been some custom options linked here before and recently a group buy thread was deleted (min. order required to do the inletting?) so there are options.

I don't have one myself but actually found my buddy's stock to be very nice. Comfortable stock with nice cheekpiece. He glass bedded the stock and it shoots well. Only thing I didn't like was the knob at the fore end as it looks funny and interferes with bipod legs.

One of the things often lost in the discussion of the NS-522 is the fact that Norinco never built any NS-522 rifles. The importer, Kengs's of Atlanta, GA, received barreled actions from Norinco, then stocked them in house with walnut stocks sourced from the Bishop Gun Stock Co. Some left-over quantity of those barreled actions ended up in Canada years and years later, where they somehow ended up in Norinco EM-332 stocks. Given the small quantity of barreled actions ordered--said to number around 2500 total--there is no wonder that no one offers a replacement stock for the rifle. Keng's had some left over stocks at one time, but they were rather expensive and they may be long gone by now.

I have opportunity to buy one of these for $160. The main negative is that it has the receiver glued in with JB Weld. It's been shot lots and in the field plenty by looks of the stock and bluing. 1 mag. I'm good with a project but is this one worth it for the price? I'd want to break the bedding to properly pillar/glass bed the action and trigger guard plate. Your thoughts?

Nevermind, it's gone. Wasn't meant to be I guess.
