Ontario Turkey hunting. Anyone getting exicited yet?

Every night this week at about 6pm there's 3 toms in full strut and about 8 hens in the field behind my house.

The one I can see his beird dragging on the ground, and he's twice the size of the others. I can already tell he will be the trophy bird this year if I can get him.

Last year I saw 30+ turkeys hunting. Filled both my tags within a week

you guys are aloowed two tags that sucks we have a spring tag and a fall tag but are only allowed one turkey a year

Also what is everyone using for loads? I was looking at Winchester Supreme 3.5" #5's...bear with me this is my first year turkey hunting.

IMHO 3.5" loads for turkey are overkill. The 3" turkey loads pound my shoulder enough. I heard of a lady that broke her collar bone shooting a 3" 12ga turkey load while prone. That had to hurt!

I know every gun is made different but I have a mossberg 535 it comes with a XX .670 full turkey choke but I heard the HS undertaker is a good choke. Also what is everyone using for loads? I was looking at Winchester Supreme 3.5" #5's...bear with me this is my first year turkey hunting.

You're using #5's for bear? That's a tad bit undergunned....:p

But seriously now, your choice is a perfectly good one. My experiences with the same load in 3" length has been stellar with no complaints.
I know that there's only week left before the opener but try to steal a few hours and actually shoot a few different combinations of shells on paper. I can almost guarantee you that your current setup will perform great, still, it will really instill confidence in you when you get to see ragged holes in the paper at 20 and sometimes 30 yards. Oh yeah, I suggest you shoot some 3" shells as well, you might be suprised at their patterns...

that is the same set-up I'm running (I'm using #4 tho) works well for me... the 3.5" do kick but really it's only one shot and when I took my bird I didn't even feel it.

My last tom bird fell to a full load of 7/8oz #6 extra hard shot. It was sitting on top of 18gr of 700x in a 2 3/4" shell. No recoil very dead turkey. It was a baikal sxs 28" barrel f/m. You don't need the big stuff to kill a turkey. Mosy of mine have fallen to 2 3/4" #5 rio mini mags. I do have a 535ats with a .650 custom choke for long shots. It patterns 2oz of #4 into a 8-9" group at 30 yards I believe they were winchester. It was a black box with 10 rounds in it. This year tho I'm taking one with my 10ga sxs. 2 1/4oz of #4 outta a 34" f/m barrels. Patterns nice and hits like a frieght train on both ends

okay here is another quick question. My buddy said to use my 28" barrel as opposed to my 22" turkey barrel in case the turkey gets hung up a little farther than expected...yes/no?

Quick answer, you'll be gaining about 6" in range...

Modern powders are quick-burning and don't require long barrels to deliver the required speed to the shot, velocity loss for the shorter barrel is relatively minimal. Concentrate more on choke/shell combination than barrel length, and pattern-pattern-pattern.

I have my license and tags and cannot wait to get out their on opening day for my first Turkey hunt! I get excited every time I think about it :D Those birds aren't going to know what hit them!

My daughter and I got our blind up and brushed in tonight.Few tracks and feathers around but not alot of sign.Got to get her 20 gauge patterned and we are all set. This will be her first year as a shooter not just a caller.Hope we can get her some action.

I've been practicing my calling for a couple months now. First time user of a diaphram call. I've been working with it for a couple years but was not confident to try it in the field before. Think I'm ready this year. Also have a couple slates, a box call and a push/pull call. Put on red dot scope on the winchester 1300 last year so hoping to be ready to go. Now just to get ready for an early morning on monday to get in and set up my ambush :)

Nice pattern there Yorgi. That Federal flitecontrol wad ammo is nice, but you have to shot it through a fairly open choke. The wad is designed to stay with the shot column for a tighter pattern. A tight or ported choke strips away the wad too early & negates the advantages of the flitecontrol wad.
Nope!
This will be my 3rd year shooting that load with an xxfull choke
Works just fine, no issues, and I get a great pattern!
Wad stays in good shape

i to have had very good luck with the fedarel flight control out of my 535 with the extra full . thy work very well DUTCH

another quick question whats everyone hunting out of a blind or just sitting in front of a tree? I just picked up a redhead enigma blind (which is currently set up in my living room) and I may try that even though I have a new turkey vest with a nice attached padded seat, last one at Bass pro with no tag so they gave it to me for 29.99 retails for 89.99 :)
