Operation: Brno single-shot STOCK Rescue !!

Hi all; Just a bit of an update on this project.

My Chris Griesbach custom Brno Effect is nearly complete. Basically, Chris re-invented this fine rifle with a suitable stock. The buttstock was completely reshaped (with metal buttplate and grip cap) and the custom forend is shorter, fatter and MUCH nicer (with an African blackwood tip). All in all, it will become my ultimate Euro stalker. :)

More pics when I get it home.

Looks great

Wasn’t sure if the schnabel would fit the style as well as a rounded foreend tip but it turned out well.

Will there be chequering on the fore end?

Looks like and probably costs as much as a high end kipplauf now, but to your personal specifications. You are a true gun nut sir

Yes checkering coming, and yes I'm nuts. I always wanted a rifle built to my tastes.

I wish it were 7x57 or 8x57, but I'll live with 308. :)

Just an update, it's off to get colour case hardened (changed my mind), and is also getting a custom-made leather scabbard with shoulder strap. It's also getting a matching custom-made tomahawk--yes, you heard that right. Will post pics in a few months :). The stock work is beyond amazing, and I now realize that if you want a proper fitting rifle, custom wood is really the only option.

Case hardening the action? Buttplate? Grip cap? The whole shebang? Will the engraving be polished out?

Any pics of the stock finished?

Planning on scoping it? Needs a nice German scope with some QD rings or mount imo

I will reserve comment, as a picture is worth a thousand words. ;) The best in the industry currently has the Brno, and between a CCH'ed receiver assembly and an expertly applied final oil finish, it will be what Brno should have offered in the first place. I already purchased a Kozap (Brno) mount with 1" rings and I have a new Japanese-made Bushnell 3-9x40 Elite 3500 with the DOA reticle zeroed-in and ready for use, though the use of the factory irons will be its main advantage for woods stalking.

While I can't deny the accuracy and utility of 308 (especially the factory Sako Hammerheads in 180gr), I wish it were chambered in 7x57R or 8x57R. However, it will not see a reamer in my lifetime--though I have been known to change my mind :)

Apparently, Brno offered an optional 20ga barrel assembly, and I wish I could track one down.

Approximately $6000 so far, all in (includes initial rifle purchase and scope set-up). So, not outrageous, and it will be a lifetime/ heirloom piece.

You haven’t even hit a k95 yet; keep going :)

Still voting for just the chamber seeing a reamer to 30r blaser

Just an update that my rifle is almost finished. I had Oskar Kob measure the receiver hardness on the Rockwell scale. He said it is extremely hard, so much so that CCH is out of the question. So, the metal work is staying blued. After flipping/flopping on stock finish, I landed back to hand rubbed oil. Chris Griesbach did the initial stock reshaping (to my specs), and made me a new, better shaped forend. He ultimately got it to about 90% of where I wanted it to be. For the money, I couldn't ask for more. Wayne Doucette, a close and personal friend of Oskar Kob, who I would argue is the finest stock maker in the country, is doing all the final tweaks at a level that I have never seen before. I will post photos soon, but the rifle will end up being a perfect fit, with world class finishing.

My custom Appaloosa leather sling (thanks, Track), with a Brno 21H insignia will get the nod. It's light, strong and comfortable (btw, '21' is a special, personal number to me and is just coincidentally an American-only marketing designation for what is actually Brno's 'Z' rifle series and the 'H' denotes half stock, which is what my Brno Effect has). Given that the sling has a pair of crossed tomahawks over a Thunderbird, it had inspired me to ask Wayne to commission me a matching Tomahawk--another of his many custom specialties. If you're interested in old guns and other interesting projects, here's Wayne's site (beware, major eye candy):
