Mine was received on 2008/10/14
tried calling, they put me through to an answering machine, said they were away for a week!:(

Where are you? I'm in Alberta. I called again and she said its sitting with an rcmp to be reviewed.

I asked her if she knew how big the queue was, or what position i was in the queue? she said she doesn't know, but they are all backed up because they are short staffed. bs.....

Got mine approved today. 35 days not too bad I guess.

I called the CFC and asked for the Alberta CFO, I didn't give the operator a reason why I wanted to talk to the CFO, last time they wouldn't put me through. When they came on I gave the fellow my info and asked if there was a problem. I was put on hold for about 10 seconds and the guy came back on and said it's approved and to expect it in the mail within 10 days.

Awesome. Call them and check into it.

Well, mine was received 2009/02/24. Today's 03/24 and my status changed to issued! Talk about clockwork precision. 28 days sharp. =D

Got called on the 16th day and so did my references.

For the interesting part:
I lived in two different countries in the last 5 yrs, so I had to submit both police records (one of which was translated in English from Spanish).
My references are in Dominican Republic and they were called w/o any issues. One of them didn't answer right away and they left a voice message telling him to call back (which he did like 10 minutes later).
Anyway, I guess I had a non-standard situation and I'm certainly glad it went smoothly! As others have reported, the few times I called I was treated very professionally.

I'm a happy camper waiting for the mail to do its work!

Edit: update: Just got the card! 37 days in total door to door, not bad!

PAL timeline in BC

Sent the app on Feb 10 2009
They received the app on Feb 16 2009 (was able to see it online a few days later)
Received a call on Mar 06 2009 (both refs called the same day)
My Pal was approved on Mar 16 2009
Pal in my hand on Mar 25 2009

Hope this helps,

Looks like there's no set standard time frame for getting your PAL. Mine has been in the works since January 9, and I STILL don't have it.

I was interviewed and my references called in the first week of February. I wish I knew what the hell the holdup is.

Thanks cam1936,now I can up grade my lic. I read back in this thread
about them asking 20 questions, does anyone know these or where I
can find them as a heads up to my parents.

fyi I'm in alberta. one last phonecall to my CFO. i asked "its been 5 months, is there any possibility it could take a year?" She said she would send an email to the officer with my file. 4 hrs later it was accepted..

Application Received on: 2008/10/31

Current Status: Your application has been processed and your licence has been issued. If you have not received your licence within 2 weeks please contact the Canada Firearms Centre Toll Free number. (1-800 731-4000)

PAL processing.

What I see is how some people report months of delay and idle activity on the CFC website and with processing applications and others (like me) seem to have things happen like clockwork.

The computer system developed for the CFC has a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) component and it's processes are AUTOMATED. The agents are simply checking off boxes in the process.

On the 28th day my status changed because a nightly batch processing routine ran and searched for all valid PAL applications that have all the right checkboxes ticked and are on their 28th day.

So if anyone is experiencing delays I can only surmise that someone didn't check off the appropriate little boxes with the CFC program for that PAL application and the system doesn't continue the process.

I know how these computer systems are developed and EDS did a shyte job of implementing it and partly because the RCMP did a crappy job of spec'ing it. Don't blame it all on the agents. The $2B computer system should have had enough checks and balances to weed out these type of orphan PAL applications and flag them for attention by an agent. It's called Workflow management and Siebel (I believe that is the CRM tool they use) has that capability.

So note to new applicants.

If it's a 2 weeks and nothing shows on the system - call to verify reciept.
on the 28th day and no updates - call to ensure "all the right checkboxes are checked".

Once an agent sees a problem they can fix it.
Otherwise you will leave your fate up to a poorly written and spec'd computer program.

alright, I'm starting to get really worried.

I mailed my PAL application on the 12th of March and when I type my info into the CFC site, there's nothing. Nada. Tells me to come back at another time or that it hasn't been recieved. Today is April 3rd. WTF? I figured it would at LEAST be considered in process. Should I wig out?
