Isn't that armour German? Didn't they make it for machine gunners as they tended to be targeted more than your average rifleman? I am guessing British looting?

These are British Daimler Scout cars, sometimes called a Dingo. Ford Lynx was similar but on a taller chassis with Canadian wheels.

Saipan, 1944. Neat how everything is dirty as hell. One doesn't see that at airshows these days...

Flying as many sorties a day as these guys would have, a dirty plane would be very much near the bottom of the maintenance list. Beside, if you want to clean it, just fly through some rain.

If you look close it looks like a Canadian SVT-40, look at the heel of the receiver.
