Picture of the day

OK, so today's theme is tanks. Here's a pic from WW2:

One wonders what's kept in the suitcase.

Plenty more in the series here: http://ww2images.########.ca/2013/02/tiger-332-stuck-in-mud-recovery-training.html

sPzAbt 503, Russia, Summer 1943.

( schwere Panzer Abteilung 503 drei staffel.)

This unit was the only one which had two German crosses on either side of the storage box.

The "suitcase" below the left air cleaner is a tool box.

Coincidently, my 1/16 Tamiya remote control model kit has these identical markings.

Neat how the sheet metal bits always take a thumping. There isn't a softer piece of that tank that hasn't had the corners rounded off it via some sort of misadventure.

I guess invading Russia is hard on kit.

I had no idea there was even one of those in Canada!

WHERE at Wainwright?

If you know base wainwright a bit, it is in a compound across from Cubic CWES building.
(you live near wainwright smellie?) I would of stolen a truck when I was there a few weeks ago to creep a peak at the knowledge and collection lol

diopter is closest so far!

Sweet baby Jesus I love the Panther.
My guess is this is one of many pictures you see from the Ostfront of panzers that fell through rickety peasant made bridges

When I first saw that picture in the site Dark Alley Dan posted my first thoughts on it where, how could I, using the local resources and recovery of the day, get that tank off the bridge abutement and in doing so keep it from being further damaged to be returnable to service. I would not be overly concerned about further damage to the "soft stuff" like bins, boxes and fittings but more concerned about the turret/gun and drive train. To bad there are not more pictures showing how they got it out of this predicament.
