Picture of the day

No not a waste, just life proceeding as normal. Like everything else in this world, when the usefulness is done or no more parts are available time for the bone yard and scrap metal facilities.
...

For the most part, worn out trucks don't get any sympathy at all.

Those trucks are all destined for one more mission.

Any comments on the paint job on this one?

This looks like some of the bone yards that used to be along the Alaska Hiway. Even the same kind of vegetation.

Just before the Hiway anniversary the gov't sent in a bunch of people to clean up the wrecks. Some of the stuff is still there though.

Anti tank cycles. Last ditch effort to stop hordes of Commie t-72 tanks from overrunning Cold War North America?

"Hey, look! Parachutes!"

Hey, c'mon--this was some country's early 'armoured cavalry'! By the look of it they were dropped from an aircraft and are needing to set up in a hurry.
Only one problem: Their DZ was an open field with enemy tanks nearby  --
"Crew! Caliber 50! Anti-tank Vespas, 2000 meters!...FIRE!"

Talk about shoot and scoot. A recoilless rifle produces a huge firing signature on firing and the idea was to fire a shot and then move to another (hopefully defilade) position ASAP after firing. Looks like it would have taken a bit of time to rig the thing back on the scooter in the travelling position.
There would have to be a few more cycles just to tote the ammo, but maybe the thinking was that it wouldn't survive for more than a couple of reloads anyway. Not a job for the faint hearted.

"Run...aWAY!!"

Haha, yeah. The guy on the right looks like he's got a rocket assist/booster for quick getaways, but those are a half dozen rounds for the recoilless, so he must be the loader.
IDK what happened to the trooper who was carrying the gun tube. Maybe he caught one of those .50 rounds, so his comrades are now fleeing the field.:)

Weird that the M18 57mm RCL had an optical sight but the M20 75mm shown here is stated to have had no sights!

The trick would be to get the scooters and riders in close proximity, instead of scattered all over the DZ. When I was serving, the Signal Corps had a comms group that went out the back of a C-119 or Herc right behind the platform with all the radios, etc. It was always a concern to get operators as close as possible.

I recall seeing pics of US units on x-country bikes and high performance dune buggies. Looks like a hell of a good way to get around in most environments. They make smaller targets than do conventional wheeled vehicles and use less fuel.

He is on the left. You sat on top of the Gun Tube to drive it.
