Pistol suitable for small hands.

Apparently he doesn't want a small, reliable, sweet shooting, old world classic .22lr. semi auto.
The only minor negative of the 71's is the small sights if vision is an issue.

Vision is very much an issue as well. Her eyes are worst than mine however I'm only steering in the 1911/22 direction due to a substantial discount as well as all the other recommend reasons, plus when we originally looked at suitable pistols for her the Browning was out of my price range at that particular time but was the one she really wanted and liked the most. I would have considered the Berretta 71 as well if the opportunity had of presented itself but it just didn't.

My GF bought the Browning 1911 -22LR. Yes expensive but shoots pretty good. You will have issues with the slide stop peening the aluminum slide. Kinda the only downside. That was after only 400-500 rds. Now we don’t fire it empty and or use snap caps in the last few magazine shots. Ie load two snap caps then 5-8 rounds. Kinda sucks but we don’t want it to get worse on the slide and not have it hold open ever again.

Is this a common known issue with this model or have there been improvements since you purchased yours?

Right on. I was just heckling..... never the less, the mod 71's are an affordable classic .22 semi auto. They were not always available in Canada with a longer barrel but about 4 or 5 years ago they started being imported in numbers at very reasonable prices.
Magazines can be a bit of a challenge to find.

Reliability with most ammo is a good criteria when choosing a .22 semi auto.

Something with good after market sight options and the ability to mount an optic might be things to consider.

Well I searched when it happened to ours and it seemed others had the same problem. It's soft aluminum so I can see why it doesn't wear well. We thought about sending it back to browning but the hassle wasn't worth it to be honest.

This was on the 750$ black medalist model with the gold buck mark

You got a girlfriend with small hands and bad eyesight, lucky guy:p I haven’t read all the responses but what about a Ruger MkI with a pencil barrel, or a ppk with a Pinocchio barrel? Good luck.

In this case, it would be nice to have an optics compatible model.
IIRC, Burris makes a neat adapter plate for Ruger Mark - you can install a Fastfire red dot directly on the receiver. That would roughly double the system cost though.

They are never sell guns. Mine can run mag after mag of almost any cheap ammo as fast as you can pull the trigger.
