Range Report: Ruger 10/22 vs Savage Mark II

Thought I'd joint the "fray" since I ordered a new rimfire semi .... I haven't been shooting groups with a rimfire for a while, but the old "standard" used to be 5 shot groups at 50 yds/Meters with every shot being included in the group (no "exclusions" for fliers or "pulled" shots). It also used to be common to shoot at least five consecutive groups (with the same ammo) on the same paper before deciding on the accuracy of a particular bullet/brand. My experience with centerfire, is that 5 shot groups generally average about 60 percent larger than 3 shot groups.

Ah... Now I see the problem, you thought it was a standard sized peice of paper.
Well.. It's not.
24''X19''
If I get time later tonight i'll put a dime next to the tightest group. I got defensive because he called my credibility into account, based on zero facts.

The circles I made using the finger hole of a scotch tape. The red dot I added to give me a defined aiming point, nothing more. The Velocitor, Stinger and Mini Mag are still well inside of a penny.

Very good groups then, I must say. Obviously the MKII will be more accurate, inherantly, but his bias also might have subconsciencly worked his way into the groups. A factory gun will always be a toss up until you shoot it. Not all guns are exactly the same, so noone can really say that a brand sucks until they have had a good variety of those rifles. One makes neither bit of difference in the long run.

Thanks, "Drawblood." The gun shooting well sure helps to make me look good. :)
My 10/22 is an all weather stainless model (which isn't even made anymore, far as I know.) bought 6 + years ago.

I don't own a share in Ruger, so I could careless if people dislike it.
.... But to say it's a POS is unfair. Those same people don't bother trying out different loads, and I can tell you - I was one of those people that thought it was a POS too.
The only reason why I bothered myself checking was because, I now use it for wood rat hunting. (Unfortunately I have to kill them.)
I may not have cared much about my target, but I certainly care when shooting at a living animal, to ensure a clean, effective, ethical kill.

I think there was too much focus on the size of the peice of paper, or the rings and dots I used. I didn't care if I hit the dot or not, as the gun wasn't sighted in using any of that ammo. I was interested in the GROUPS. They were only used as a aimpoint. With a POS $80 scope it's pretty damn hard to see a tiny red dot on a peice of paper.

Obvously, the Stringers are now my go to wood rat gun. Which is funny because, my best friend has the SAME damn gun, and it couldn't hit the barn door with them. His likes Elley sub sonics.

The newest ones are not like ones made even 5 years ago. The newest ones have a trigger pull of around 7 pounds. That's pretty harsh on a 5Lb gun. It's incredibly difficult to squeeze the trigger smoothly on the new one if you're not using a vise...

.... But to say it's a POS is unfair.

I'm sure that's true of yours. Try a new one please.

Idcurrie. Did Bill Ruger run off with your wife by chance? Why so much hate? First they "all" suck, then someone posts real results and you change your tune to "only the new ones suck, not yours". How's about we hear your "unbiased" opinion on the accuracy of the Mini 14 as well. You can compare it's grouping to your vangaurd, just to be fair. :D

It's always something isn't it?
I'm curious to know if you cleaned your 10/22 before you tested it?
Did you try different loads?
When switching between loads did you run a brush/bore snake through the barrel?

The only new 10/22 I have access to, is a target model (bull barrel, hogue stock, bipod) ...Still fair game?

Edit to add;
My 10/22 was bought 2007/05/25, according to my regy.

the SR-22 has the same trigger group and pull , I also bought a new plain 10/22 less then 2 years ago (plastic trigger gaurd) and dident experince what you are saying or complaining about . Like all my 10/22's I have owned I have replaced the hammer ,but the stock one did shoot quite well for what it was . But again I have took the factory barrel off and will be buying a new .920 ,not because of the way it shot ,but because I love to play with them .

you still have not answered the 2 questions I put forward to you and would to know if you would care to answer ?, Not trying to sound like a prick but if you are tyring to call people out on authenticty or on facts it would like to hear an answer

Hardly. first, that looks rather....not authentic. If it is, sorry, but you've definitely got an outlier there. It's absolutely not typical for the 10/22.

"authentic" what would you have him do ? take it to a notery and have a stamp on it to say it is authentic? Video?, Jury?, What ?

How many 10/22's have you owned ,Honestly how many ? your statement sounds like you are an expert on them ?
I am not trying to sound like a prick , but I like to hear the facts

Except for the stinger which is odd b/c it's the least accurate ammo made.:
where do you get this from? guns like different ammo , some guns will shoot it and some wont . I cant say for my experiance the stingers are the most accurate bullet , but they sure as heck are not the worst , It depends on the gun .

I went with both and bought a Mk2 and 10/22 on the same night right after I got my firearms license. I love the 10/22 and it is a blast to plink away clays with using the 25 rounders but the Mk2 is what I grab when I set up spent shotgun shells at 100 to shoot. They're both a load of fun and I couldn't see myself getting rid of either.

Good luck on getting an answer BCboy. Although with over a dozen posts bashing the 10/22, I think we already know what sort of response Idcurrie will give anyways.

i'm not sure where Idcurrie is coming from because i have gotten better groups than that (on a good day) so I KNOW a stock ruger 10/22 is plenty accurate enough to shoot groups like Justin's
