wildcat loads

My wildcat is a 6.5-270WSM, essentially identical to 6.5-300WSM.

I am still working up loads, but so far my best is with 61gn of H1000 and a Lapua 139gn Scenar, CCI large rifle primer, and Lapua brass.

With this I get 3000fps and groups of between 0.4-0.5 inch at 100 yards.

Have a look here if you like...

My new wildcat is a 375 Taylor, which is a 338win mag necked up to 375. Velocities equivalent to the 375H&H, ballistics on par with the 308. ####ing brilliant, I must say.

It is being built on a FN/Browning Mauser 98 action, a Pac-Nor 24" chrome moly barrel, custom california walnut stock, and that is pretty much all there is to it. I will post pics when I get her all built. Could be a while...

hansol, I used a 375 Chatfield-Taylor for a few years and killed a lot of game with it.

You certainly do not need a 24" barrel to duplicate 375 H&H velocities. My rifle had a 22" barrel, easily got 2700 fps with 270 gr bullets, and the cases lasted forever.

Hey Why Not,

Great to hear someone else using that caliber. I think it is the most brilliant thing ever designed. And good to know someone who has experience with it too.

The reason I went with the 24" barrel was purely esthetics. I wanted the rifle to look like another rifle I have, and the barrel length on that rifle is 24" as well. So that was the only reason for the length. Cheers -Cameron

Any pics yet?

Hey,

No, no pics yet. The project stalled for a bit, as I had to go back to school, but then ran out of money, and blah blah blah. College wasn't for me anyways. So now I am back working as a tradesman again, putting away funds for this rifle.

Pretty soon here (I'm thinking next month actually) I will be sending the receiver out to be re-barrelled, and am currently trying to track down a stock again for the thing. I used "The Great American Stock Company" for my first stock, and they managed to screw it up big time. Sent me the complete wrong stock to boot, and then wouldn't replace it. The thing is little better than firewood. That certainly threw me off, after having such a pleasant experience with Pac Nor.

Anyone know if there are any decent wood stock makers in Canada? I don't want to go through the hassle of ordering cross-border again, and would prefer a walnut stock to synthetic.

Cheers -Cameron

I have owned or shot some of these.
Current 'cat of mine are:
22MR (7th from L), 30x47 (10th from L), 6mm 250 30° (13th from L)

It would be nice to see some of you Sask wildcatter's (dusty61, RR, and Ultramag to name a few) out for the Driller's Match. Currrently full, but expecting 2 or 3 to drop out yet so keep an eye on the thread listed below. Over an estimated $2500.00 worth of awards & Door Prizes!

I've fired my 375 Whelen Improved literally thousands of times. Comes very close to H&H at a fraction of the powder and recoil. Safe pressures, too. I'm also working on a 5mm Craig which is the 5mm Remington mag rimfire converted to centerfire.

I don't have any wildcat calibers at the moment, but I do fire a lot of bullet/powder combos that you will never find in a manual. I go about the load development in the same way one would for developing a wildcat load. Topics like that would be better discussed in a venue geared towards experimentation/wildcatting than in a mainstream reloading forum.

That would be the 7mm Remington Magnum, 1962, and it actually came before the 300 Win mag of 1963.

I use a 6mm Dasher for F-class. Its a 6mmBR blown .100" forwards and gives about 100-150 fps more velocity. Hydraulically form the cases [Lapua] and fireform them in another rifle. I took a new Stevens 200 and chambered up a remmy tent peg so I didn't have to put hundreds of rounds through my precision rig. 108 Bergers go 2970fps, so do the 105 Lapuas.

I've been thinking a long time about having a custom rig done. I have a 700 Sendero in 7mm STW with a jewell trigger and speedlock pin and have been considering building a mate to it. Just can't decide between the 6.5 STW and 257 STW.Any suggestions?
