Remington 700 Mountain Rifle scope choices

How far out has 6x stopped being strong enough for big game for ya, Suther?

I've always hunted big game with a 3-9x, so I couldn't really say. 200yds plus and I'm cranking it to 9x though, and by 300yds I'm feeling like I could use a bit more (been considering switching to a 4-12x but I'd want to get something with better glass than what I'm currently using and I don't have the budget for that right now).

I prefer more magnification over less (within reason) given the option, I ditched the fixed 4x on my grouse gun years ago for a 3-9x. Call it personal preference or whatever, but I just don't see the point in a fixed power scope on a hunting rifle unless you absolutely NEED to save those 3oz. YMMV of course, some guys love the simplicity of the fixed powers, I'm just not one of those people.

Long story short, one of these had a lot more appeal than a current production 700 does, and yknow...we're kinda gun nutz.

If you had to pick a scope out for a Remington 700 Mountain Rifle in 280 Rem, what would you go with?

I'm tempted to say Leupold FX-III, 6x36 or 6x42 but more opinions are always informative.

I have a custom 700 MR here in 257R. I topped it with a VXIII 2.5-8 B&C years ago.

I switched it out to a Leupold 4x fixed and a VXII 3-9 and both times went back to the 2.5-8.

Have you shot lots of animals at 300 yards?

I have never shot an animal with my scope past 7x, but I have also not shot anything at 300+ yards. I used a 3-9 one season, shot a couple bears and an elk; never put it past 5x. One of the bears was past 200 but that was a serious exception not the rule. All animals shot in the mountains (not high alpine I guess.)

Different strokes but for an “all rounder” I would prefer a 2-7 or 1.5-6. FOV is pretty important to me personally. Not a dig at Joel but I think he’s out east, so not exactly sheep hunting.

The 2.5-8x is a good scope; re Joel’s earlier question I find the glass on the vx-iii models to be pretty darn similar to vx freedoms. YMMV I’m no long range stud or big game hunting expert.

I use an S&B fixed 6x42 on my “mountain rifle” but it’s a heavier model I wouldn’t really suggest for this gun. Great scope and fits the “theme” though. In time I may replace it with something lighter. Also carried it around this and last year but never connected with anything. DGY you might like it; the 1 inch models are lighter

I figured! Just wanted to kinda see if this is coming from a hunting actual use perspective, or an "i've read/heard" perspective when the advice is given out lol.

Sounds like you know the answer to this already ;)

Not taken as a dig at all, and its actually quite correct.

Joel, is that the original mountain rifle with the walnut stock? Those are very nice rifle's, two of my hunting partners have them.

Yessir Pete, its the original one with the walnut stock. Cool! I've heard so many good things like that over time that I have to try one.

That sure does sound nice alright and thanks for your take on it!

3oz weight difference between the sb 6x42 and the Leupold 6x42. Not sure how you could notice that. Unless your talking about an older steel tube model or a 6x42 pmii

2.5x Leupold ultralight is worth a look. I keep selling and buying them, they suck for load development but great for hunting

M1008 I’m talking about the 30mm model, literally said the 1 inch would be a better option. Not looking for a pissing match

Hey, I'm trying to sell the scope to this dude lol

Hahahahaha

I'm definitely open to it, as long as you don't mind waiting for a while! Gotta let the expense account replenish a bit after buying the rifle haha. Let me know how much you have in mind for it though please.

Maybe I am talking out my ass; but oz are what counts in Mountain rifles. Either way I never suggested a 6x leupold nor have I ever owned or used one

Yeah, the 6x Leupold was all me lol.

The 6x42 is oddly heavier than some of their 3-9x40s. Not sure why.

It’s all just information.

Was a 3 power custom shop Leupold on the ee. They’re nice because of the longer tube vs the 2.5 (which itself is a nice light scope which is has a very good rep for durability) Have you decided on what rings or bases you want to run.

Some people don’t like extended bases or two piece mounts but that can restrict your selection.

Bunch on nuances between the fixed Leupolds in terms of eye relief and scope tube length if that’s going to be important depending on your mounts/rings

Yeah, I like em because they actually allow the scope to be mounted farther forward than Leupold scopes with an adjustment ring.

On a Remington 700, with their 13.5" (actually 13 3/8" according to them, strangely lol) I'm often finding a Leupold variable is too close to my face to use the lower magnifications comfortably anyway. Happens with some other rifles too.

One of those nuances you mention.

Use Talley lightweights and flip them “forward”? The 2.5x has a lot of eye relief

I'm sure with all the options I have here I can make somethin work for it. :) Just gotta push it forward enough so that I ain't craning away from where I'd normally have my head.

May snag one for use on the Ranch Rifle and see if it makes the transition to the big gun.
