Ruger 10/22 Takedown Warranty Results

Last week I sent a comment to Ruger on their customer support page, here is the message I sent.

I recently sent my 10-22TD to Location Snapshots in Quebec for a warranty replacement of the barrel due to a crooked rear sight and poorly heat treated chamber end. I am extemely unhappy with the repair done by Snapshots. There is not enough room to go into detail here but I have started a thread on Rimfire Central. You can read about it and see the pictures there. I welcome your comments.

Thanks
It had to be short becasue they only allow about 200 characters per message.

I got this reply today.

Dear Mr. C:

We have reviewed the information regarding your warranty repair. We agree that the quality of the repair does not meet our standards. Please return the rifle to Location Snap Shots. Location Snap Shots will reimburse you for shipping. If you have the receipt for the original shipping charges, you will be reimbursed for that too. Location Snap Shots has been advised of your complaint and we have asked them to expedite your repair. Should you have any questions, please let me know.

Best Regards,

I guess the squeaky wheel does get the grease!

Well done John:

The squeaky, reasonable wheel gets the grease.

Quite frankly, I think you showed them up a bit with the improvements you did to their repair.
Kudos to Ruger for stepping up and making this right.
It's not over yet but I'm sure they'll put a crackerjack gunsmith on it, or just replace the barrel.

You've helped us all.
Thanks.

I have decided not to send the rifle back to Snapshots, I don't want to give those guys a chance to screw it up even worse. I refuse to pay for shipping again so I guess I'm on my own. I used my polishing wheel and fine jewelers polishing compound to polish the barrel and remove as much of the carnage as possible. The divot near the rear sight is still visible but not obvious anymore. I also spent some effort polishing the front sight area. I managed to removed both sights and re-install them without making a mess of it, not sure why their expert armourer couldn't. The pictures make it look kind of blotchy but in normal light without the flash it looks great (except for the divot). I would like to send an email to the Ruger head office in the States but I can't find an email address. If anyone know how to contact them by email let me know.

This guy is NOT an armourer! He is nothing more than an idiot with a hammer, and should be fired

I would like a TD really bad and I just got my wife a savage 94 .22 pink mossy, I told her now I need a .22 and she told me to go ahead  but I'm worried that I might get one of these lemons.

When your speaking to Karla again can you ask if they are going to look into all the problems people have been having?

It would be nice to see Ruger stepping up and fixing them before they leave the shop and not just after.

I'm sure Ruger will be more then willing to step up to the plate, it's the middle men that are the problem.

Wow, my barrel was definitely mushroomed, and I just assumed that I had somehow wrecked it in transport. The carry case doesn't give much protection. I tuned it up redneck style just to get it reassembled after a very difficult taledown, but haven't fired it since. I couldn't think of any instance that could have caused the damage, but what do you do? I'm happy to see that it is likely a materials issue, but I'm not too keen on puting out more cash to MAYBE get it fixed. I've been tempted to just ditch the TD bits and use the receiver for a project. Damned if I want anything to do with quebec either. Food for thought.

There so much potential with this setup...I can't remember what forum but a guy cut a Hugo stock and got a Kidd bull barrel...god it's nice...I would like to do the same but in time..

OP have you heard anything from ruger yet?

Just to bring you all up to date on my warranty issue with Ruger and Location Snapshots. I sent this email message to Ruger's customer service rep for their export department.

Dear Ms. Engelstad,

Thank you very much for your reply. I have already removed the sights from the barrel myself and used fine jewellers polish and a high speed buffing wheel to remove most of the scratches from it. I could not however, remove the dent near the rear sight but I don’t feel comfortable sending the rifle back to Location Snapshots. The level of incompetence they displayed and the fact that they lied to me when they said the barrel came that way from Ruger, has put me off and I want no further dealings with that company. I am going to leave the rifle as it is rather than send it back to Location Snapshots again. You have restored my faith in the Ruger name and I just got back from buying another 10-22 (not a takedown model) for my son that will be his Christmas gift. It would be nice however, if there was another choice for warranty repair locations in Canada. Having a company like Location Snapshots representing your company in Canada will surely cause more dissatisfied customers. In fact I have heard from some other Canadians who read my post on Rimfire Central and have themselves had dealings with Location Snapshots. Not one had a positive experience with them.

Thanks again and have a Merry Christmas.

John

I received a reply the same day, as you can see the problem here is not with Ruger's customer service. It is a problem with Ruger's warranty repair depot in Quebec. Here is the reply from Ruger.

We appreciate your response. We are sorry for extra work you had to do and for your frustration. I have referred your emails to our management team. If you change your mind and decide to have the repair done, we will follow through with Location Snap Shots and make sure you are satisfied. In the meantime if you would like to send me your mailing address, I would like to send you a Ruger "care package" for your frustration and to show our appreciation for being a loyal Ruger customer.

Happy Holidays!

Ruger isn't the problem.
It's their "repair" depot in quebec.
I've never heard anything good come out of any repair depot in quebec.
They have a cornered market and they know it.

That barrel almost looks like it was welded up and the dovetail was recut. Could that punch mark be welding porosity? That might explain the 'polishing' around he dovetail area.

If that is what was done to this barrel I'd be concerned about how straight it was now...

Ok, I think I'm going to search for a 10/22.... I want a care package lol Let us know what you get...pictures... But like you said its, not the customer services... Is Quebec the only service place for Canada?

If more people complain like I did, maybe Ruger will find another vendor to do their warranty service. Karla said she is going to forward my complaint to the Ruger management so maybe something will get done. I'll let you know what comes in the care package.

Dang, so is the 10/22 TD still have crooked rear sights etc? I wanted to get one of these but guess I'll have to buy it in person. Wouldn't mind getting a care package though. Mmmmm, Ruger swag! :)

That's good news Johnnyc14, thank you for helping the gun community out and hopefully something happens.. Maybe next email you get will be saying they got a new repair depo.

Ruger Canadian warrantee..............I "dealt" with Location Snapshot several years ago on a repair issue...............lousy service........couldn't get them to answer some of my emails.........I finally bought the needed parts from Western Gun Parts..........hope I never have to deal with this Quebec outfit again.........

I wasn't too happy with that outfit in Quebec either. Charged for one supposed to be free warranty repair. Slow. Never sent a part I had ordered, or made contact regarding it.

Why Ruger wouldn't have a factory service depot in Canada is nutz.

Just to bump this thread up.

What did Ruger send for a care package?

All this hype on these 10-22's has me thinking that maybe I should own one.
The last semi I had I loaned to a buddy and he put a new scope on it.
I guess that's the last I'll see of it.
