Ruger M77 MKII Stainless 7.62X39

Fun...
I have come to the conclusion that the vast majority of my firearms need to fall into the "fun" not "purposeful" category. I don't need 20 deer rifles... but I love to shoot... and reload... and shoot some more.

I had one. Typical Ruger - solid and well built but with a typical Ruger trigger. The only hang up I had was it is built on a standard short action (.308 length) vs. one scaled down to fit the cartridge like CZ does. If I am going to carry a standard sized rifle, I might as well have it chambered in .308 Win.
I've never really been put off by action length... it could be in a long action, I don't mind a half inch and three ounces of metal... but your point is taken. I am attracted to this one only as a plinker... and have little other use for it. Feel like it will settle in with this crew quite well;

A fellow up here killed a moose with his. Apparently the moose didn't understand that it shouldn't die after being poked with the commie carbine round, and it was this particular event that caused me to take the 7.62X39 a little more seriously, when chambered in a decent rifle. By all accounts that moose wouldn't have dropped quicker had it been shot with a .300 magnum. If I was looking for a down south rifle that was suitable for backpacking or taking on extended canoe trips in SE MB, that Ruger would be a good choice, even though I'd prefer the more compact, if less resilient, CZ-527 for that particular duty.
The Ruger's longer magazine and action length should allow you to seat out 150 gr bullets, if the lead is long enough, so as not to loose any of that limited powder capacity.

This is what I was thinking... I have 2K 150 SP's .308" and 3K Cast RN 160's in .309"... might be just the ticket for casual plinking to burn up these bullets. I also have about 500 123 SP .311's from the last 7.62X39 rifle I had.

Nice collection, the No 1's as well. How on earth do you manage to pick which rifle to use? Range in you backyard?
