Ruger M77 MKII Stainless 7.62X39

Hey Nutters... anyone shooting a Ruger M77 MKII Stainless 7.62X39... 0.311" bore... canoe paddle stock... Woody panels. I am on the fence about one... any experienced comments, observations, and results appreciated.

My ex father in law has one. I thought it was kind of odd at first but it is quite accurate and shoots soft. If I saw a deal on one I would pick it up.

I own of those and yes they are .308 bore. They were throated properly for 7.62x39 surplus ammo.
I find mine very accurate even with surplus.

This rifle is actually part of a three-way deal with another Ruger fan... he has one that I want and I now have the two that he wants... but in the process, I have this one to play with. I also have the two top loads from the previous owner, who was a meticulous reloader and kept an accurate load book with group results... so I have a good baseline.

I remember buying that gun back in 1989 at Lebarons for $479. As I recall, they're were only 5,000 more or less made. Old Bill used .308 barrels because he had a surplus of them from the defunct XGI project. That's why the old Mini 30 had .308 bores too. Mine really shines with .308 bullets and .311 bullets are only slightly less accurate

Nothing wrong with squeezing a few thousands into a bore if it's throated properly. I have essentially the same reamer designed for .308 bores.

My only problem is neck tension on the .308's with the Russian sizing die... I want to pick up a 7.62X39 .308" sizer (full or neck)... I will predominantly be shooting up a few thousand 150 gr .308" bullets... all of my other .30 cals are being fed 165 & 180 gr.

CanAm has the Zastava M85 in x39 on for $375 this weekend if anyone is after a nice steel and wood compact rifle.

RCBS dies gives you both buttons for .308 and .311 or they did.
You can always get a Lee neck collet die and use or turn down a .308 mandrill.

Turns out the Lee-3 die set comes with both expanders also... I'm all set.

You're killin' me here, you know that? If I'd of thought further ahead, i wouldn't of bought an SKS on Thursday...Damn.

I regret selling my M85, what a fun round to plink with. I should also have kept it for deer season.

This seems like a very nice rifle, m77 action and all. How does it compare to the CZ price wise? Hate the protruding magazine on the CZ.

I got mine back in the 80's when they first came out and used it for hunting & running deer competition shoots. That rifle put a lot of meat in the freezer in the 20+yrs. that I owned it. Would've kept it to if it was in blued steel & wood. These puppy's shoot well.

I have both, actually my wife has the CZ, but I've shot it a lot. Price wise, the M77 MKII is no longer made. Ruger now makes the M77 Hawkeye Compact in 7.62x39. I've never handled one of them yet, but I know the barrel is .311 bore now.

To be fair, both the M77 and CZ shot equally well. CZ's have adjustable triggers, my MKII doesn't. The Ruger shoulders better for me with my long arms. I'm not a fan of the Mini-mauser actions.

For some reason being a newbie I cannot insert images in my post, so here's the links

304 yards is a pretty good poke for the X39...

Indeed, it was a long shot 100yds across a skeg and another 200yds up a cut line for the little Ruger with the little cartridge. With just a Leupold 2-7x33 lightweight, I was more amazed than anyone that it connected with a perfect lung shot.

This particular rifle is now my go-to deer gun. It has earned my respect as a capable hunting platform and is light as a feather... something I seriously appreciate as I grow older. I chuckle at the boys and their big 26" barrelled magnums, and they chuckle at me.

The M77 compact in 7.62x39 has been discontinued for a while now.

My bad, wrong date. I think I first saw them then and bought it in 1991. I can't remember anymore.

I have a hard time remembering my birthday, let alone a gun I bought more than 25 years ago... I'm tremendously impressed that you were within a decade.
