Ruger M77 MKII Stainless 7.62X39

A fellow up here killed a moose with his. Apparently the moose didn't understand that it shouldn't die after being poked with the commie carbine round, and it was this particular event that caused me to take the 7.62X39 a little more seriously, when chambered in a decent rifle. By all accounts that moose wouldn't have dropped quicker had it been shot with a .300 magnum. If I was looking for a down south rifle that was suitable for backpacking or taking on extended canoe trips in SE MB, that Ruger would be a good choice, even though I'd prefer the more compact, if less resilient, CZ-527 for that particular duty.

The Ruger's longer magazine and action length should allow you to seat out 150 gr bullets, if the lead is long enough, so as not to loose any of that limited powder capacity.

x39 is far more capable than the rap it often gets.

Agreed. I dropped a decent white-tailed buck with the 7.62x39 cartridge from my Ruger Hawkeye compact at 304 yards. The Hornady 123gr passed through the entire lung area and out. The deer went 10 yards and died.

304 yards is a pretty good poke for the X39...

Regardless of it's hunting prowess... I will never take this one hunting for anything bigger than coyotes... I have numerous more appropriate choices... I have nothing to prove, other than I like shooting...

One other aspect of the 7.62X39, is that I really enjoy loading the case. I have one reduced load where I load 150 BTSP'S backwards over Trail Boss.

Agreed, 304 yds is pretty darn good. x39 can be a very accurate round.

I think the 123 gr SST would be just as effective even a little further out.

I've never really been put off by action length... it could be in a long action, I don't mind a half inch and three ounces of metal... but your point is taken. I am attracted to this one only as a plinker... and have little other use for it. Feel like it will settle in with this crew quite well;

my my my Lord, there is no end to this man's gorgeous collection of oh so fine rifles! It just isn't right! And 3 out of 5 scopes ain't bad, either!

was always wondering why the romanians or the russians where using (mostly sks but not only) it for brown bear or other game like moose for the russians seems you answered my question Mike.

I worked with a guy that clobbered a real toad of a BC moose with his. I always thought that the rifle as a whole made a lot of sense. Essentially a bolt-actionned 30-30 that can use pointed bullets in a light short package. Really, what's not to like? I don't even mind the canoe paddle stock with those fancy inserts.

I too wonder about the bore size. Only one way to find out for sure. Buy the damned thing and report back.

Was there any doubt... I bought it...

I loaded up 100 rounds with two loads, .310" 123 gr SST's and. 308" 150 gr SST's.

"HeadDamage" above may be correct... in that it is a .308" bore... I was cruising around the usual sites looking for bolt action loads and found where many had slugged theirs at .308/.309".
