Ruger Scout 308 vs 450 - Deer Rifle

Looking into rifle specs further I don’t think the guide gun is the rifle for my purposes.
Id like to drop down the weight on it, I already have a 308 that doesn’t get carried around due to its weight.

Going to a Ruger ranch makes more sense from a cost and weight savings perspective - not as cool as the guide gun but it will do the job just as well if not better and it’s easily half the cost.

On a completely different perspective but still on the lines of compact sub 100 yard gun is of course a 44rem mag lever with a 16”.
45-70 would also be an option but it’s hard enough finding them in stock yet alone one of the guide gun versions.

Thanks everyone for your input

Have a Rossi M92 44mag in 18". Super fun, 75yds or less for deer. Super fun range gun. I love two foot fireballs at dusk.

Xtp projectiles are pricey but the best game bullet in pistol calibers. M92 based rifles would be maybe a tang or dovetail peep/ghostring, the action doesn't lend to optics.

I have both and I really couldn't pick which one I like better. They both tick different boxes.
The .308 has ammo availability (usually...) and somewhat cheaper operating costs.
The .450 has a big thump and is awesome with cast boolits, especially heavy ones.
I love the style of both rifles. They look very cool and their length makes them handy.
I will admit the chunkier .450 is a bit of a tank to lug around and it's muzzle brake looks like it was repurposed from a Howitzer.

I run a 2-7x Burris Scout on the .308 and the .450 has a traditionally mounted Bushnell 1-4x24 LPVO attached to an XS Sights rail.

Like I said, tough choice. Sorry, not much help here.

Good Luck.

Whats it like to shoot that 450?

For the intended purpose I'd go 450. Deer are easy to kill and I like a big bullet. The 308 is more practical but that's not why we all buy new guns

:agree: I've had numerous .308's over the years but rarely used them for hunting, mostly for target work with my handloads. I much prefer the 450 BM as it be
an easy to load for & more effective cartridge for me. I only run hardcast 250-360gr boolits through my Ruger American Ranch and they shoot tight at 80 yds.

I have no need for the Ruger Scout rifle meself, as they got too much goin' on in terms of overall ergonomics & the iron sights fitted on 'em. They be rather pricey
to boot.

When you can't argue with the facts.

refresh me on the facts again - One string of one lot # of 308 150gr factory ammo fired from one 16" rifle , against a youtube video review of a longer barrel 7.62x39 shooting a 20% lighter bullet?

Oops, that's two from your test.

"308 Win, Remington CoreLokt 150gr PSP ~ 2820 fps claimed
16.1" Ruger m77 ~ 2496 fps"

In my notebook, Hirtenburger 147 grainers do 2521fps in a 17.7" barrel (and 2770 in a longer barrel).

So yeah, the short barreled 308 is in the same ball park as the SKS.

Whaty velocity do you get with 147/150 gr bullets in your SKS?

is that a FMJ load? I gave up looking after page 5 on google with no results

This is the hunting rifle forum, you should at least compare an expanding bullet load

Sounds like an excuse. The Short barreled 308 is very similar to the SKS.

I chrono'd Barnaul 125gr soft points at just over 2400fps (average, using a Labradar) from a SKS last fall. That was over a single box of 20.
I don't have a 16" 308 to compare to, but based on what I've seen posted for velocities out of 16" 308 Sig Crosses (2550fps+ with 150s) the two aren't similar at all.

Interesting. What velocities do you get from your SKS with 150 grain bullets? You seem to be avoiding answering that question for some reason?

Never seen 150gr loads for the 7.62x39, velocities for the SKS according to my notes range from 2395 fps (Remington-UMC) to 2520 fps (Czech BXN 85 and Hungarian 21 79).

I'm sure you and Bartell will claim ~25 grains of bullet weight puts them in different categories.
