Really going

Just finished packing for tomorrow. I've got the sniper shotgun, 120 rounds of 12 gauge slugs and a brand new PAST recoil reducer (picked up today) so I can shoot all that ammo.

I'm taking my Browning Micro hunter Hornet and Rem 582 for some light shooting after. It will be done tomorrow. It is suppose to be a nice 32 degrees tomorrow

Arch:p :)

I have faith in you, Arch. I must admit, I haven't had much success with my old Stevens 58 bolt-action project (best group = 1.5" at 100 yards), but it's not rifled and it's almost as old as my dad, so that's to be expected :p Show us how it's done!!

As an aside, is 32 degrees C an optimum temperature for shooting slugs? I'm asking because I don't know  What are the effects of ambient temperature on slug gun accuracy? Does anyone know?

Results

Hi, well it's done. Couldn't post last night, damn relatives didn't leave intil 1:50 AM.

The shooting went very well, better than I had anticipated. The high power Winchester's were absolute crap. But I took some Barnes Expanders and Remington Copper solids to test as well.

The Winchesters are only good out to 150 meters after that they are flyers. You might as well be using a garden hose. I do not recommend Winchester, though they may work better in a different gun.

My 200 meter groups with the Expanders and Rem Coppers were 3 inch groupings and better. I banged away for quite a while at 200 meters, simply because it was working so well.

The big 300 meter shoot was a challenge. There were no dots left in my scope (mildot reticle) so I had to approximate the hold over. It took a could 18 rounds to get it figured out but I did.

With the little ammo I had left (should have brought it all), I used the Barnes Expanders and the Rem Copper solids. The Remingtons seemed best for the long shots since it has a smaller hollow point creating less drag. The 300 meter grouping (best) was 7.75 inches.

The Barnes Expanders grouping was (best) 11.25 inches. A guy (Gary) at the range thought I was nuts, but once they started smacking the targets, I had an instant pal. There was at the time of the shoot, a 5 to8 mile an hour head wind gusting right to left at about 5 degrees of the target line. I'm sure that with a no wind day, the groupngs could get better.

I was worried to postpone again since there are a few who get cranky waiting for results. they must be retired or something  .

I'm sure that there will be one or two that will call bull****. These results are truthful and accurate as the pics will tell. Still a none believer ? Bring out your slug gun and we will shoot for pink slips. :D ;)

I'll scroll back later to see who the winner is. I have to leave for Dad's 61st birthday.

Arch:)

Pics are coming shortly, I'm on snail speed dial up.

Arch, thank you, and Good Shooting. I never would have believed that sub 10 inch groups are possible at 300 meters, I think I guessed 20 inches. Great research, we want pics!

Here is an excerpt from Jon R Sundra's test of the same sluggun...
"Shooting Industry Magazine"

I've just finished testing the two new guns, the Mossberg 695 and the Savage 210. The former is derived from an action Mossberg's been using for decades as a basis for a budget line of shotguns. Savage, on the other hand, had no such existing action and designed one from scratch, based on the 3-inch 12-gauge shotshell.

Since this is not GUNS magazine where new firearms are reported on in depth, suffice to say that these guns are capable of some pretty astounding accuracy - like 2 1/2-inch groups from the bench at 100 yards. Not only are the sabot loads of Federal, Winchester, Lightfield - and the Copper Solids of Remington - accurate, but they virtually double the effective range of the old Foster-type slugs when used in smoothbores.

Despite all this newfound potential, however, these guns are still 125-yard Whitetail and Black Bear rigs, period. Along this vein, I've heard that some of my gun-writing colleagues have commented that these guns are effective out to 175 and even 200 yards. Not only is this not true, but to even hint that the rifled slug gun with sabots is lethal out to 200 yards is a great disservice to both the industry and the hunting fraternity.

100 meters

Hi, here is the first pic of my 100 meter sight in. I bought a fancy bore sighter and it works great. First volley is from right to left until center. Next four shots were at the muley, whitetail, antelope and moose. All of these shots were with the Remington Copper solids. The other small holes on the target are from sighting in my Browning Micro Hunter in .22 Hornet. More pics coming.

200 Meters

This target was at 200 meters. I was very excited with this range. The two holes that I marked out with larger green outline were shots taken with the Winchester Golds (not impressed, gave up on them).

The top four shots (excluding the Winchester Gold shots) were the Federal Barnes Expanders. The bottom four, (in a nice row :) ) were the Remington Copper solids.

More pics to come. Arch:)

The 300 mtere shot

Here is the First pic of the 300 meter shot. After all my blasting I realized that I had only two rounds left each of the Barnes Expanders and the Rem Copper Solids. I will do another shoot soon and throw more at the targets.

This pic is of the Federal Barnes Expanders. One more pic to come.

The 300 meter shot (2)

Hi this pic is of the two shots taken with the Remington Copper solids. I held dead on the same place that I had shot the Federals place. Obviously the Remington fly a little higher. After the first shot that landed high, I had to stick with where I was aiming and the second shot made it into the grid.

I am going to be using the Remingtons exclusively for the next shoot, so there will not be any variances in the ammunition. I think for my Savage 210 Sniper the Remingtons are the preferred round that this gun will like best. I will post the new shots when I get a chance to go again. I can't say when that will be for sure.

Winner !!!

I looked back through the posts and Troutseeker guessed correct at 7.75 inches. :D :D :D

I will be shipping him the scope as soon as I have his address.

Arch. :) Thanks all, it was fun. Keep you updated on the next shoot.

Great shooting! Now you know you can hit something at 300 yds. Not trying to be a dink, but I have no idea - what energy does a slug have at 300 yds? Are you going to be doing some kind of pentration test at that distance, wet phone books or wood or something? This is fascinating stuff, keep up the good work.

Great shooting. Weird but interesting idea that I enjoyed following. I also think some kind of penetration/energy results would be a great follow up story. Sniper Shotgun II. the sequal. Thanks and keep up the great work.
