Savage 210F Sniper shotgun (targets are up !!!)

Whoo Hoo!!! Lucky guess on my part, good shooting on Arch's part! I was not surprised since in days of old when I shot lot's and lot's I could shoot 3" groups at 100 yard using an 870 with an 18 1/2" barrell... Arch's high tech, scoped rig should have been a shooter. Now if only he handloaded some slugs...

Has anyone stopped and calculated the energy and volocity left on the Federal barnes and the remington Copper Solid @ 250 or 300 yards? My thoughts are that it is one thing to pop holes in paper targets but another to down a good buck at those ranges. The whole idea that you are "out" of mildots for hold over correction is what I'd think would be a good indicator that those slugs are starting to fall like a rock. I'd be interested in seeing some numbers

If my calculations are right the 438 grain Barnes expander at 1530FPS has around 942ft lbs of energy at 300 yards. At 250 yards it would be 1036ft.lbs of energy. Now compare that with a 1Oz rifled hp by Win which has only 882ft.lbs at 100 yards.

sounds like a bunch of fun. next time i have my 870 put together for deer hunting ill try some 200m shooting. at 125 yards i can shoot 3" groups just by sitting and using my knees as a rest....

Good Thread, Just found it. I like to see guys who actually shoot the loads for real results. I have a Browning A Bolt 12 guage, (wish I had a buck for every time someone told me there is no such gun), that shoots 2.75 winchester partition golds into 6" at 200 with a 12" drop from a 100 yard sight in. Not the accuracy of the sniper slug gun but plenty good. I don't shoot farther than 150 yards for the hunt but it's nice to know where to hold if you need a second shot on one that's still standing.

it all depends on what the gun likes..Right now Im in the middle of testing 3 loads...3in Barnes Expanders, 2 3/4 Partition Golds, 2 3/4 Core Lokt Ultra....Shoot 3 rounds then clean barrel....Bought a fancy boresighter so 2in high at 50 yards will be the first test......If none of these work into minute of deer Im going to be p'od royally....

Back to Minshall, all of them will be minute of deer, guaranteed, no matter what gun, at USUAL shotgun ranges. If you are looking for long-range accuracy like Arch wants, well by golly you might need to try a few more loads......

And from inside the book it reads...
Look closely. Then look again. that target on our cover is the Guinness Book world record holder for 3 shots, with a 12 gauge slug shotgun, at 100 yards. it was fired by Bob Sowash of B.R.I - it measures just just over 3/4 of an inch! Yes, the nearby ammo and gun did the trick.

The semi Auto shotgun you see on our covers is a remarkable development of B.R.I / Benelli, what's remarkable? As sold by La Paloma marketing, the B.R.I / Benelli comes complete with an E.R. shaw rifled barrel. And when you combine that gun with the B.R.I sabot-encased slugs, you get that kind of accuracy - from any B.R.I / Benelli.

Just to put Icing on the cake, and to dispel any possible second thoughts, the gun used to set the world record was simply an "out-of-the-box" specimen - nothing special. that friends is an accomplishment! want more? See pages 210 and 121.

So methinks your modern, and tricked out slug thrower is going to do pretty darn good at 300 yards. :)

hmmmm what about a .308 cal/12ga sabot shell kinda like the idea of the DU kenetic energy rounds emplyed by the abrams big barrel small projectile

comments? this would be a lighter rnd then a slug less weight to carry longer range thiner less drag longer profile more stabilty with a rifled barrel should give sick range if it can be done those BRIs look intresting though

back to AlderTK...........it might be profitable for you to read up on shotgun sabot rounds, which have been around for a long time, and work on the same principle as tank gun sabot rounds, whether APFSDS or whatever. But since deer are easier to penetrate than the front glacis on a tank, no shotgun ammo manufacturer so far has decided to try depleted uranium for the projectile................

You might try DU BB's in your Red Ryder though, it might surprise you! ;-)

i wouldn't use DU on game ruin the meat but by using a way undersized projectile heck i'd go down to a .22 even .17 dart from something as massive as a 12ga should give psychotic range and power any one disagree and when fired from something like a 3 1/2should give you a low enough BC to hit tagets beyond the 500 yard line with a 12gauge

I have been shooting my Thompson Centre Encore Pro-Hunter with a 28 inch rifled barrel... 1:28 twist. I have a Leupold VX-III 4.5-14 X 40 Boone and Crockett reticle on a custom mount... the weaver base had to be built up to the barrel profile to get the adjustment. I have shot about 100 rounds through this slug gun all the way out to 300 yards. It shoots consistent 1-1/2 inch groups at 100 yards... and they open up to four inch groups at 300 yards.
The B&C reticle allows me to use the yardage lines accurately with it set on 10 power plus or minus 2 inches all the way to 300 yards! I am using Remington Core-Locked Ultras and I would be confident shooting a Deer at 250 with these slugs through the Pro-Hunter! I shot right through both shoulders on a doe at 170 yards last week. I am not sure about penetration at 300 but if I had one standing Broadside with out much wind I would be confident of a vital hit at 250.
