Semi-Sten: CFC AND RCMP approved and Home at Last

the rcmp say the magwell IS "the reciever" so by useing an orig magwell you would be makeing a converted automatic firearm and they are prohibited so you would be making a prohib which you cannot do

make a new magwell its a "new reciever" and is designed as a semiautomatic

thus legal

I got that. What I don't get is how anyone can tell an original "reciever" from a newly manufactured one.

The sten mag well is the registered part because it typically had the serial number? I can't see the mag well always being the "gun." Consider the Uzi. Is the pistol grip now the gun?

So if I build a sten mag well without owning an SAS parts kit, does that mean I now illegally made a prohib since it might be possible to fit my new receiver/mag well to a real sten? I'm confused...

And is there now any legal requirement NOT to use an original STEN mag tube if the receiver is the mag well?

And another question is... can it legally take 10 rounds pistol mags? :D
Or can an adaptor be legally made for this new sten to do so?

Well, the waiting is over, and she is home at last. Purolater just delivered it to me from the RCMP labs in Ottawa. A week late for the battle of the Bulge match, but oh well, it will give me time to spruce her up for the June D-day match.

Here she is warming up on the foor of my office after her long trip, next to my packaging that the RCMP recycled to mail it back to me. The whole gun fits into a 14" long tube 6" in diameter with lots of room to spare. Also in the picture is a 50s dated Cdn Arsenals 40mm case...not sure why that is floating around my floor. ;)

I have to reposition the ejector slightly as it wasn't kicking the empties out fully all the time. I might build some kind of a buffer to protect it from the IVI ammo I prefer to use.

I have had more than a few PMs from guys wanting to know what I thought about making a similar gun open bolt/recycling the origional receiver, and other shortcuts. This project took almost 3 years. If you want to change the specs, feel free. But don't be too disapointed if it takes you another 3 years (if ever) to get your sample back. I'll post the FRT# once the CFC gets the registration cert to me over the Christmas holidays. Now I just have to wait for a warmer day so I can run out to the range and try her out again.

What a great early Christmas present. :)

Congratulations! Your patience finally paid off!
Given the current difference of opinion in official circles about what part of the Sten is the receiver - the mag. housing, or the trigger housing assembly - it would probably be best for anyone considering one of these projects not to recycle either of these original parts.

I have my doubts about whether the magwell would be considered the reciever on the MKIII as it's a permanent part of the reciever tube. It would be a very simple matter to make a magwell for a MKIII.

The mag. housing interpretation was specific to the Mk. II carbine, and I suppose would extend to the Mk. 5. With the Mk. III, I would assume that the receiver would be the complete casing assembly. Even though it is serialed, a detached Mk. III magwell could hardly be considered a receiver. As Stencollector has pointed out, neither the mag. housing nor trigger housing makes sense as the receiver.
Nice looking Mk. III. Is it (2), (3) or dewat, if you don't mind me asking?
