Semi-Sten: CFC AND RCMP approved and Home at Last

So if I remove the magwell from my original Sten and hand it in the rest of the gun becomes nothing? Boy are the mounties STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

Kind of crazy, eh? I pointed out the folly of that to the CFC tech back when all this started 3 years ago. If you take the magwell off a sten, it can still be fired once (albeit slam fired). So is that not a gun? The CFC tried to claim that the trigger housing on a sten was the registered part. I pointed out that without that attached to the gun, you could pull the bolt back, and the gun would continue to fire until the mag was empty.

I have to believe that the reason they chose the magwell was that it is one of the more difficult parts to make. (took me two days from 1/8" flat plate :) ) But it is really not a critical part in the firing of the gun. Take away the tube however (that is the part the BATF in the US decided constituted the gun) and all you have is a bag full of parts.

UPDATE:
Just got this from the RCMP :
...I am writing to inform you that your firearm will be packaged and returned to you within the next day or so. Your firearm has been described in the Firearms Reference Table as a Homemade, Sten MARK 2 Copy. The Type is Commercial Version and the Action is Semi-Automatic. The Legal Classification for this firearm is Restricted....

Too late for this years battle of the bulge (3 days away) but what the heck, looks like it can be done. Looks like the new magwell was the key, along with a lot of patience.

As soon as she gets back, I have a small change to make on the positioning of the ejector, and then we'll make another trip to the range. I may make up another body for it in a mk5 configuration, and just move the magwell and internals accross.

It will be a merry christmas afterall. :50cal:

Great news Stencollector! Big congratulations are in order!

Congrats! Good to hear about the little guy winning once in a while. There are a lot of fellow stennutz out there that owe you a debt of gratitude!

These guys sure know how to get their timing right...a couple days earlier it could have been at the Battle of the Bulge!

That's great. Congratulations on your perseverance. Once you get it perfected, what do you plan to do with the design?

Shoot it.

The design is not mine, and the only thing I have done that 1000 other americans haven't, is to build that magwell. And as I must have said 10 times in this thread already, I am not a manufacturer, so I cannot build these for others.

The RCMP are just not very smart are they? :(

Now they have given precedence to the idea that the magwell is the registerable part that means every 12(3) sten owner in the country can hand in their original magwell, make a new magwell and register a newly made Sten (copy) as restricted. How is that any different from what Sten Collector did?

I have only one thing to say to the Mounties .... THANKS. You guys solved a big problem for us Sten owners. Maybe I'll just keep the magwell to maintain my 12(3) status. ;)

That this new copy of a Sten will fire from an open bolt is not really an issue as they have OK'd other open bolt semi-autos in recent years. There was a MAC10 based gun I saw a few years ago and I believe the MP38 copy is an open bolt gun as well.

God I love ignorant burocrats and their idiotic rules! :)

Stencollector: How did you make the new magwell? Does it accept original Sten mags?

Go way back to post #56 in this thread. I must admit I intentially made it harder than it had to be. A guy could have really bought a piece of pipe and turned it to the proper dimensions rather than making it from a flat plate of 1/4" steel.

Only thing you would want to watch if you converted your C/A sten into an open bolt homemade model: That little peehole in the bottom of the trigger mechanism dustcover is perfect for sticking a small screwdriver through and holding the sear open. Also, it is my understanding that the lab can fire the gun with lesser and lesser charged bullets until they get it to double tap. I'm not saying the lab did these things with mine, but that it is possible. Also, while I took the easy route by making the magwell as they wanted that, the judge's ruling in the crown vs Rogan case held that the sten receiver was the tube with trigger housing. I have the case somewhere in my inbox. However that was at a lower court level, so I don't know what the implications are, since I am not a lawyer. Mind you, I'm not a gunsmith either, and I built a gun. :)

Suputin- Hey, way to go, let's get right on destroying this accomplishment...this decision is based on a semi only kit that is virtually impossible to make full auto as they determined in their exhaustive testing. Read the whole thread. Why insult the good folks that made this decision?
