Service Rifle NOOB wannabe questions

rdelliot: You are based in a great part (Service Rifle matches in Connaught) of McSquinty's Bantario. Come out and shoot with us this weekend. I'll be at Connaught for the 24-25 May match. Charlie Range, that's where I'll be. Can't shoot my newly barreled .308 Garand since it's short chambered 10 thou, so I gotta use my backup .223 Service Rifle; the M700 .223 LTR Wannabe with 9" twist bbl shooting 68 gr. Hornady HPBT bullets. And yes, I'm wearing a plate carrier to show those young punks that a 50 year old is out there trying to school their butts ! :D

Aw crap. This weekend is the annual family three-generations-in-the-boat jihad against the walleye :(.

Is there anything else happening in Ontario service rifle-wise this summer? I gotta say I'm really tempted, even if all I've got is an iron-sighted M-14 and marginal sk1llz at best :).

Just a heads up for those looking into service rifle. Looks like someone has decided to arbitrarily rewrite the rules and the minimum trigger weight is now 2.5 kg instead of 5 lbs.

Hey guys... I'm a little late to this forum, and I hope I don't get in trouble for reviving an old thread but I found this site that has the rule for the Canadian Forces Small Arms Competition. This past September it was run by the DCRA, so I would think that the rules would be fairly similar. Also they had a service pistol shoot using IDPA rules. It looked very interesting watching the guys go through that.

I'm also a newb at the Service Rifle game.. so any more help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated.

Take care and have a great day!

Hi guys,

I live in northern manitoba... pretty far from anywhere I could compete. Eight hour drive from Winnipeg. So competing isn't really an option. But is there anywhere i can purchase these figure 11 and 12 targets so I can simulate my own match in the local sand pit?

thnx

It would depend on what you mean by vision challenged. If an optical sight can be set up for an adequate sight picture, aiming would be OK. Some matches are cued by appearance of the targets. Might that be an issue?

I too would like to get involved in Service Conditions Matches\Fun, Where the heck are these magical places called Borden and Connaught? I know i am asking a lot but are there places in southern ontario (london area) that run matches or practices? i would be willing to drive a bit.

Ontario Rifle Association is the organizer. I think Winnoa is the closest to your hood but not sure they are shooting a lot there anymore.

The happening places are CFB Borden (just south of Barrie) and Connaught (Ottawa)

if you break 150,, you kinda know what you are doing. If you break 160 you are a good shooter. If you break 170,, you are a pretty good shooter. If you break 180,, you are up there with the best of them. If you break 190,,, you can consider yourself in the elite league.

SO what if you can't break 150 or even worse? Should you just pack up your balls and leave?

I've played an elite level of hockey my hole life, I'm competitive by nature. But, I've never competed in anything using high powered military rifles and pistols.

I'd be nervous forsure. Seems too nerve wracking to just jump into a match right off the bat. It would be nice to have some kind of live slow motion tutorial for newbs...

50Calshooter,
Go to the clinics, just jump in. The water is fine. It's fun. You grow every match and these are great people to shoot with.
If you can't shoot its ok, you will learn.
Different vibe than some other shooting games (I'm going to shut up, for fear of being barb-b-qued).
:nest:
Guys are very helpful and Tim and Barney coach you on the way.
Just don't drop your pistol, it's very off putting.
CQB ROCKS

What you will need to add to your equipment list is something to see the spotting disks in your target. 8x Binoculars will do, but a spotting scope is better. You don't need anything elaborate or expensive for service rifle, after all, you are not looking for the actual holes in the target, you just need to see and count the 3" dia. bright orange disks placed in the bullet holes by the butt marker.

Ah ha! Now I get it! ;) Was wondering how the heck I was going to see anything at 200m + with just small binos. I just have to see bright orange disks, not the actual bullet holes.

I know what you mean. I played competitive sports for years, and didn't like being a noob again. No one cares how you do, so long as you don't shoot their target ;)
You compete against yourself, trying for personal bests. I think that's what most people are doing anyhow.
Also, there's usually a trophy for top Greenshot (noob), so there's something to compete for even if you aren't in the elite levels yet. If you never get there, who cares, still good times.

Bring whatever you have. You are going to have fun even if you are shooting an SKS. Some kind of optic is a good idea though. Those targets look real small at 500m. BC has an excellent set of matches. This past year we had nearly 70 people shooting.

Personally as far as practice goes, I shoot a lot in the off season with a single shot .22 Anschutz. I focus on each individual shot as an individual event. I don't shoot any positions other than standing. If you can make a perfect shot standing you can make it in any of the other positions. It does work!
