Service Rifle NOOB wannabe questions

All good stuff. another key thing that is often left out is changing from one position to another. For instance, when you've "mastered" the standing and the kneeling/sitting, work on getting from one to the other quickly and smoothly in a way that you end up landing in a comfortable position so you dont have to adjust or end up pulling shots because your foot is buried halfway up your A**. Another big help is getting used to the run time. a lot of people run their guts out from one mound to the next to get there early, fine if it works for you but keep in mind how much harder it is to steady a rifle when youre hauling wind in through your sphincter.

Obviously these are the more advanced areas, to be considered once you are proficient in all the basic positions at the appropriate ranges. Where wind is concerned... get good at the rest so you know where youre at, then start to integrate wind adjustments.

It all takes time for sure! Practice practice practice. This is a difficult but really fun game we play. Don't expect to jump in there and be at the top of your game. Just get it there, shoot a match to give yourself a benchmark to better and have fun! It will be no time before your shooting into the 500s and better.

How do you guys practice for service rifle?

I picked up a DPMS .22LR upper and have found it to be a great training tool. Dry fire is nice, but there is no feedback like a hole in paper. A bingo dabber dot at 25 yards is a great target for practicing positions and transitioning between them.

A .22 is your best bet. Work on standing sitting and kneeling. Personally I train with a bolt action .22 and my focus is only on making my shots subconscious. I shoot only standing because if I can make small groups standing then sitting kneeling and prone are easy. I'm very comfortable with positional shooting as I have many years experience so I focus on what will make the most difference to my game.

If you're in Ontario, the ORA doesn't shoot the traditional matches and the CQB stuff can be practiced directly with a .22 for practice.

I have given Tim and Bolivar printable face and chest areas with the scoring zones if anyone wants them.

Hello, I'm a newbie too and would love to participate. unfortunately this link doesn't work anymore.

Thanks

If you're in the Montreal area, there isn't a really close long distance highpower range.

"National Capital Region Rifle Association" fires from Connaught Ranges (on west side of Ottawa)

The P.Q.R.A. fires from Batouche range at CFB Valcartier (Quebec City area).

Thank you so much for the swift reply.
I really don't have a problem in travelling to Ottawa or val-cartier but I don't know how to join. Whom to contact...

In bc there are about 4 matches a year. 2 in chiliwack one on the island and one in kamloops. they run mainly in the spring ending with the bc championships the last weekend of may. To shoot them you must be a bcra member, not sure on cost, and pay the match fees. Usually $50-70ish.

Thanks for that. I tried looking on their website last night but couldn't see any info on it. I'll email them. I read through the postings here and have some homework to do.

I moved the 2014 Vancouver Island Regional Service Rifle match to the 9th of Aug. Regionals are currently not being used as qualifiers so running them all before provincials is unimportant.
Jamming all the BCRA SR competitions into the month of May makes no sense to me, so I am not doing it.

Anyone have contact info for the NCRRA? Contacted them two weeks ago about possibly joining their Service Group and haven't received a reply. I don't want to submit the membership application form because I want to attend one of their shoots as a guest first to get the lay of the land before I commit, and I won't have my rifles in time for the remainder of the season anyways.
