I can see where the OP is coming from - I have a very nice Russian 1950r that I am researching it seems to be a sought after model - am new to SKS's do not want to devalue it by pew pew pew pew and pew - all numbers match where numbers were put. If I do shoot it it would be after I figure out all the markings on it and what they mean etc.

The btch may end up being a safe queen if the collector value is there.

I never understand the "don't want to devalue my sks by shooting it" thinking...

It's an SKS for crying out loud... do guys really think they're going to make bank on them?

Its not about money .. for crying out loud.. Its about using something thats not have been yet and i know theres few people looking for the same. if you dont give a #### of sks good for you, but There is collectors for ANYthing and i personnaly like the sks and its story. It looks good on my wall tho ;)

Thanks for your reply Everybody. I am gonna try her the rang soon.

WHY ? do you think shooting it would devalue it ? Just wondering Bud RJ

I recently bought my 2nd SKS. It is a Russian 55/56 Refurbish all matching except the stock. It may have less than 100 rds thru her. It has a beauty all it's own and loves my reloads using cast bullets. Shoots POA using the reloads and the same POA at 50 yards using Ukraine factory ammo. The OP made the right decision. The rifles are meant to be shot.

Clean it watching some youtube videos. Take it out, shoot it till goo starts ozzing out. When done, pour scorching hot water from a thermos down the barrel. Finish off with brake cleaner and then fluid film (Get the gas system). Happy shooting :)

Best way I find for corrosive ammo.

You are responsible for any liability from shooting an old military surplus of unknown origin. Generally, I would not entrust new shooters with mil surps.

Maybe we should have the government pass a law requiring a six week course in how to safely handle a surplus military rifle. Cover such things as not looking down the barrel with your finger on the trigger. Stuff that only a trained warrior would know about. Included in the course would be a disclaimer covering off any liability the Instructor might incur if one of his students, out of curiosity blew their head off while doing so. We would have to spend at least $50MM to cover the bank of hired civil servants to track the course participants. When the Gov't deficits became an election issue we could cancel the program and ban all the surplus military firearms due to the reported fatal shooting involving a new owner of a surplus rifle. He apparently looked down the barrel of his gun.

I do share your concerns.

The only sks you have up there that should be taken care of is the 49 Russian that is all 49 parts and matching. The rest are in some cases unusual but most are ok to use wisely. Collection wise the 49s are very rare in original configuration. Shooting does not hurt them as long as you clean up after corrosive ammo shooting.

Depends on what you want. I have a russian refurb with export marks to shoot and 3 unissued, unfired from factory chinese that i keep for display... do what you want, everyone will have their opinion.

Unfired, unissued, un-refurbish, and all original are 99.9% unprovable claims to make for any 70 year old, surplus military fire arm.

Its a gun. It was made for shooting. So shoot it. Then clean it thoroughly
