SIR/Cabela SKS pics

gandalfe, nice stock you have on your SKS!

i've noticed that the paint was more nicely done on those with birch stocks. the ones with laminated stocks were more roughly done in comparison.

i think the SKS's look more original if they were blued. so, how hard is it to remove the black paint and then re-blue?

i am thinking to soften the black paint and wipe it off as much as possible, and then sand-blast the rifle. finally, re-blue. don't know how the bluing will turn out, but at least it should be better then the black paint! ;)

Why not parkerize, then spray and bake on some GunKote?

"APPLICATION Pretreatment:

Alloy Steel: Stainless Steel: Sandblast (all sandblasting should be done using aluminum oxide 120 mesh at 50 to 70 pounds of pressure.) Sandblast and phosphate or sandblast only."

I bet it would look awesome and last a long time.

Wow, from the reports coming in, I was expecting crap in the mail today.. Boy I could not have prepared myself enough for the disaster that was awaiting me at the post office.

There is about an inch by 1/2 inch chunk out of the wood just under the bolt, that was replaced with a little piece of wood held place by 2 little nails, and the wood surrounding the mag is disintegrating.. Is this sort of stuff common????

I don't think I could have been more disappointed. SIR should be ashamed, the way they lied to me over the phone.

pics coming..

Here's another one for the EE, she'll make a good shooter for someone... difference is, this time the buyer won't be lied to

Picked mine up today from UPS - looks like it got paved into a road surface, picked up, brushed off, and boxed up (poorly). Peckish squirrels seem to have had their way with the stock, and the front sight is drifted WAY off. Force-matched stock (4 different serials struck through) and trigger assembly. And I love the naugahide pouch :p

Ugliest thing I ever done seen.

BUT...

Under all the ugly is a well-put together gun. Bolt is tight and smooth, trigger is crisp, smooth, and not too heavy, bore is the shiniest thing I've ever seen

Gonna take her to the range and see how she shoots. I have a good feeling. Then, if all is good, it's a date with stripper, a park tank, and a synth (probably tapco) stock. And maybe some williams peep sights.

I figure it's already bubba'd ("bubbov'd"?) and the other guns cringed a bit when I put her in the safe, so why not?:ar15:

hey, don't sweat too much!

let's hope hollywood make a movie called 'saving private comrade', and soon after EA and ActiveVision will join in, and voila, the price of your ugliest SIR Russian SKS will skyrocket!

back in 2000 when i was browsing garands wearing synthetic stocks at a local store, i was kidding with my friends, "Wow, look at these ugly things, who is going to buy these at 199 each!!!" ;)

why bother ?? if you dont know how its gonna turn out, why not sell it and buy a non-refurb?? that way you know way you are getting and most lightly cheaper .

This old gal's clearly been to refurb hell and back!!!

Congrats to the guys that actually got something decent from SIR.. On the plus side.. if i can consider any part of this disaster a plus, so far looks like all the numbers match, except of course the force matched stock.

I think many will agree, SIR is well deserving of the old 'Picard double face palm"

I'm thinking those black refurbs might just look good in a T-6. And that one looks like a good candidate if any ever did.

I went with SIR over moving target to save a buck.. now i'd have to spend the same amount of money to get a decent looking stock on this thing.. arghhhh

Here's what I got today from SIR - I really was expecting worse!
Both Tulas, a '53 and '55, covers, carrier and bolt natural match, remainder is forced...
They are both going in the EE....

Yes, I do believe you have been saddled with the fugliest stock I have ever seen on an SKS.

My condolences.

I'm starting to think I lucked out with my rifles......all things considered. They look more like Dave's.

i noticed from all the SIR refurb i received are the rear sight are dark grey , that is probably what was under the bluing , anybody know for sure ?

Those sights are parkerized.

All but one of mine are grey parked, the other is blued like my Chinese SKS's.

It looks like we all got a mixed bag with forced matched serials, paint dribbled bore; fugugly stocks, and parts bin specials.A few of these peices don't qualify for "very good" status that were advertised.I would recommend a few phone calls are in order.SIR shouldn't get away with sending us under par weapons.Send them a few pics and demand some money or ammo in exchange for this mess.Mine is good enough for the shooter I wanted but some of them are feeble enough to gripe about. We can always bombard them with E-mails if they don't comply.
