Smith and Wesson M&P my opinion

It's just such a terrible feeling gun

the frame is lightweight, the slide is heavier, so it's top heavy and unweildy.

and yes, due to this unbalanced weight, the recoil instead of raising the gun, makes it sharply rotate rearward and up.
And I'm comparing this to every other handgun ive ever used, 1911s, sigs, 686 revolvers, CZs, etc etc etc

I dont get your comparison..in relation to other polymer guns this SW is good. Low bore axis..ergonomic grips..good sites.. nice scallops on slide. Trigger smooth enough. Unbalanced weight? Recoil? No offence but it sounds like you havent shot alot of guns to make this comment...

The MP would be a great newbie or chick gun...

I've shot the rental one at TSE in 9mm. It's basically a S&W Sigma with a redesigned grip. The grip was the main problem on the Sigma, followed by the trigger. They've fixed the grip but not the trigger, but that link Slavex posted looks interesting.

I'm not keen on the magazines being made out of metal, they'll shear off the plastic mag release eventually, I've seen it happen with a Sigma.

Is it better than a Glock? Hmm... I certainly thought the sights were much better than on the Glock. Both of them have crappy triggers although I'd say the Glock trigger is a teensy bit more consistent. It did have a more comfortable grip than the Glock. Without taking my chrono down the range I can't comment about MV. One of the things that pisses me off about Glocks is the rough cutting of the breechface, S&W doesn't have that problem either. And the S&W ten round magazines are easier to load than the Glock ones. But being metal they will dent feedlips when you drop them.

Well, I won't be buying one because it's a "cop" gun, but I don't own any Glocks anymore either.

What I rate pistols on are: accuracy, sights, trigger, grip and mag release.

Accuracy: the same
Sights: S&W wins
Trigger: Glock wins (barely)
Grip: S&W wins
Mag. release: about equal, but I think the Glock wins in the long-term.

So that's a tie.

After reading this review, doing some research and fondling Slavex's M&P 9mm, I think I will be going with the M&P 9mm over the HK USP that I wanted.

Great Review & great Pics.

if you grip the gun properly it is no more unwieldy than any other pistol.

It looks like the barrel is threaded to the breech block on the S&W, ala norinco copy of the SIGs, not one piece like Glock/Sig.

After closer inspection the barrel/chamber unit is one piece. There is a groove machined around the barrel were it meets the chamber that gives this appearance.

Darn fine review.

I handled one in 9 when it came in and quite liked its look and feel. Sights were great and the leftie-friendly options increased my respect for S&W.

I just can't bring myself to sell my Glock. I have too much 'stuff' for it now. :p

From the 2 people that have a 9 & a 40, they have had problems with the original front sight falling off completely or being loose.
Also, the 40 had major problems with the mag release spring (cheap thin metal pin) becoming weak to the point that the mag would release after every shot. He reversed it to right side release and it improved to the degree that it wouldnt drop the mag after every shot, but it is noticeably easier to push in then a hi power. Apparently he just contacted S&W about it and they say they are AWARE of this problem and have identified what is wrong. They are sending him a replacement spring (cheap thin metal pin). They already sent him 2 replacement front sights after the original fell off in the first 10 rounds.

Anyone else have these problems?

Nice review Bud. My friend Salvex offered to let me fondel his and I did not take him up on it, bought a 5946 as we are supposed to be transitioning to a 9. A fellow officer brought out his M&P the other day and well, now I own 3 -9's.
Had to let the unfired Springfield GI go to get it. Wife just glares at me now lol!
Here is a suggestion and I did this to my 226 and 5946. A bicycle inertube, cut 2" or more(Cut to taste)and slip it over the pistol grip for that more sticky feeling and save on the Houge to buy more rounds! It works pretty good I think. Give it a try.A cop friend turned me on to it.

Only problems I've had since June have been due to reloads. And S&W is sending either parts or if in the states are taking the guns in for repairs or replacing them.

What I would like to see in reviews is a bench rest test of 10 shots @25Yds. A sore issue with me, because I have spent money having my CZ75 rebarelled and it still won't shoot 3" groups. If I could be confident in getting an out of the box pistol that would do that, I might buy it.
