Soo my Type 97 just blew up on me

Bag or cover your other presses so you only work on one at a time. Colour or label your powder measures if you have multiple measures. Only take ONE powder out at a time and NEVER leave powder in a hopper after a reloading session. Thanks for having the courage to share the actual cause with the rest of the community. You no doubt just saved someone else from a major KABOOM. You have my respect, sir.

You definitely have my respect for being so open and having the courage to share what was the underlying cause of the problem!

Pretty humble admitting the mix up to a bunch of nuts like us.
We tend to be way too hard on each other.
It is a mistake I hope not to make, but surely am capable of too.

24gr of Titegroup in a 5.56 case,,,wow,,,!
Just glad you're still here and no physical harm done.
Now to get over any possible residual flinching,,,.:p

Maybe the T97 is a bit stronger than we thought,,,.

I have always been careful because I have read other posts about it happening, I was always checking the powder in the container with the powder in the hopper before pouring, I suspect I got distracted by one of my daughters or wife (my life is not my own) I keep all my powders in a wooden locker so I have to go get it. I think I stick to the bagging idea.

I do wonder about the use of AR mags, not T97 mags and getting bullets pushed back on loading. The mags are close but not exactly the same. Many dealers replaced the T97 mag before the buyer even got them.

This right here for other and future t97. I had that problem with mine with any mag sometimes it ftf and you see it but what about the time it feeds with a push in bullet?

Who knows it might be a contributing factor here or not but its a comcern.

All and all owner still got lucky and got is face intact :)

So just found the problem, pulled a bullet and found a mix of 4320 and what is likely Titegroup. It seems I must have put some titegroup into the wrong hopper. I have several presses and pro 1000 and loadmaster side by side, I must have become distracted and put it into the wrong hopper. I think I will have to change the hopper colour so i can't do this again, a very expensive mistake, but still I have only a bruised face, ego and wallet to show for it. Actually if it managed to stay together mostly for somewhere up to 24 grs of Titegroup I am impressed and will buy another one.

Funny enough, i just watched a documentary on the US marines booby trapping ammo caches of 7.62 with c4 to kill the users.

Thanks OP for clearing that up and I am glad you suffered no big injuries. I was reading nervously and having second thoughts about mine. Maybe some enterprising individual will come up with a metal part to replace the plastic shield. Notwithstanding the cause of the catastropic failure, because it is a bullpup the proximity of the chamber area to the face concerns me.

Sir, you are a rare individual within the firearms community and I applaud you. You investigated the problem, realized the error was yours, and owned it, Kudos to You!!

I think the mass of the bolt carrier deflected a lot of the blast. If that was a AR15 kaboom and your face was by the chamber, you would of had Joker scars or looked like two face :p

Actually there are two design elements of the T97 that helped mitigate this situation. The first is that the left side of the barrel extension which the bolt locks into is a pretty hefty steel extension and the second is a gas relief hole directly in front of the magazine housing. I do not think the outcome would have been as fortunate with a lot of other rifles.

I suppose i should wait a few days before telling the wife I need to buy another gun to replace it....

If I were you I would feel pretty confident in trusting another T97, I have seen more expensive bolt guns cause more severe damage and injury under similar circumstances.
Thanks to your openess in reporting and sharing the incident my opinion of the T97 has gone up by a fair bit.
Cheers.

You are fortunate in your misfortune that it was a mix of 4320 and Titegroup rather than just Titegroup.
This is what 41 grains of Titegroup looks like in a 7mm-08.
