SR22 Rifle Questions

My new SR-22 build; Step 1

I have recently acquired a used SR-22 chassis and a new Dlask 12.5 factory contour barrel. Seen here assembled temporarily on a sliver 10-22 receiver:

My plans are to build a relatively low cost, relatively light weight loaner gun (for friends and family to shoot). I have ordered a set of Troy-like folding sights, I don't intend to mount an optic, or if I do it will be an inexpensive red dot. I also have a simple A-2 flash hider on order. I am leaning toward the MFT stock that gcdavidson has used on his recent build(s). I am thinking I will remove all or most of the side rails to save weight. I may try cutting a couple of inches off the front HG and rails, although I am undecided right now.

So it will, hopefully, look similar to this SR-22 from gcdavidson (I really like this rifle), but in black and slightly longer. I must ask him how to attach a Ruger 10 round mag to a 5.56 mag body (I have a black Pmag I would like to use).

Yeah like you said, that 12 inch barrel barely makes it pass the HG.

I'm definitely going to need the barrel extention or thake out the hacksaw grrrr, that second option scares me a hell.

I have gotten a really good quality Diablo 10" aluminum cutting blade for my table saw. I would like about the same amount of barrel showing as in the dcg build above. Wait and see if it works well on mine, if it does, you are welcome to ship your HG to me and I can cut it for you.

I would like to know how to attach a 10 round to a 556 mag. And I'm pretty sure you can't hacksaw a barrel to less than 18"

We are talking about cutting the Hand Guard, not the barrel.

With this stock HG and the Dlask 12.5" barrel, the muzzle is closer to the end of the HG than Cirrus8 or I would like.

Thanks for the help and the offer, I might take you up on that. I would have to cut the rails too. I'm waiting for my barrel and actually see what the fit looks like. And then will decide if I go chop chop or the extention.

At first I was reading "loner gun" and conjuring up images of a hermit living under a bridge fondling a SR-22. And then my inner grammar nazi piped up "He means loaner you idiot, read the rest of the sentence!"

The MFT stock is sweet! It a super tight fight. No play at all. Even tighter than my milspec Hogue 6-pos stock, and that thing was a honeymoon fit for sure. I was torn about getting black...the best part about black is that it would have been interchangeable with other builds.

I could swap a cut HG & rails for an unmolested one, but honestly, it's really easy to do! A new hacksaw blade and a vice, and then use some masking tape to guide the cut. If you screw it up, just cut it again a little closer to the HG nut.

The BX1 to the "AR" mag was a bit more bubba. It's a $10 (cheapest airsoft mag I could find) I cut maybe an inch off the to of the AR, filed the bottom of the BX1 flat, and filled the AR mag with plastic tube. Packed in a 1/4 tube of JB weld, clamped it, and wiped off the excess spooge. Let dry overnight and finish sanded the exposed JB. Keep meaning to paint the mag. I'm going to do the same with a BX1 and a Uzi or HK style mag.

That made me laugh :) I have corrected my spelling/grammar mistake

Re the cut HG and rails: did you just touch up the cut ends, or repaint the entire part? What paint did you use?

Could you post a close-up picture of your BX1/AR mag out of the gun, so we can see the connection? Also I don't quite understand the plastic tubing and JB weld explanation...I need a mag modification for dummies lesson.

TEG, I just touched up the ends. I used high heat flat black BBQ paint. This paint dries 'flatter' than the Ruger parts, and this upsets my OCD. So I wiped the dry painted parts with my thumb. This puts a small amount of skin oil on the surface (I'm sure regular gun oil would work, but my thumb was closer). Then lightly buffed the painted part with a paper towel until the sheen matched the rest of the parts. I'll take some pics.

Mag conversion - there are some plastic internals with the airsoft mag, which I left in place. Since the metal edges of the mag provide virtually no contact surface for glue, you have to give the bottom of the BX1 something to stick to. In my case, I had some scrap plastic rod which I glued to the bottom of the AR mag, and then cut flush with the top. The intent is to make a floor for the BX1 to rest on. You could probably use MDF or even a long threaded bolt to attach the BX1 (hmmmmmm).

Note the front/forward edge of the AR mag where the BX1 is *not* attached. The 'lips' of this part have been filed down slightly to allow the BX to seat properly.

Here's the cut handguard. Man, the camera does not lie! I need to wear reading glasses from now on when I am doing this kind of work. You can see two areas that would have benefited from extra sanding. I can't see these on the actual rifle, but in macro mode, well, there they are. Top rail is getting slightly worn around the edges. I believe I sanded these areas far too smooth before painting, they were practically polished, and as a result the surface did not have enough tooth for the paint to really stick to.

Thanks gcd, thats is very clear to me now. The close up photos are great.

I am going to try this with a Pmag. Since the BX1 mag, Pmag body and Pmag follower are all plastic, I wonder if I could just epoxy the 3 parts together. I will experiment and post the results.
Cheers

Gcdavidson, I have question for you. It may have been mentioned somewhere in this thread so I apologize if I missed it, but is that a 12.5 inch Dlask barrel and a factory ( cut) Ruger handguard? I also just picked up a SR22 and like the length that yours is. Looks like it would make a handy little gopher blaster. I'm having a tough time deciding between a 12.5 or a shorter one.

I have a couple SR22's in this thread. One has a 12.5 (the one with green hogue furniture), the most recent ones are 10.5" Charger bbls. The HG is indeed a factory Ruger model that has been shortened.

Thanks, I was referring to the one just a few posts above with the tan furniture. I'm assuming that's a 10.5 inch barrel then. Might be a good compromise to my 12.5 or 8 inch dilemma. Just gotta find one now. A 12.5 Dlask was gonna be easy.

And thanks for the help!

No can here, but I just bought a barrel shroud from keniti tech. Its a first gen so the cap you can't unscreew, and you can't screw it on like a silencer.

Here is my attempt at a Pmag/BX1 magazine graft:

I still need to clean up the cut edges with a file and I don't have any epoxy so in these pictures it is held together with a few pieces of 3M 2 sided tape. Even with just the tape holding the BX1 to the cut piece of Pmag body (used as a replacement follower) and the "replacement follower" just friction fitted into the main mag body, it works and holds together well enough to test fit the mag and check the function of the mag release.
