Standing Offhand Challenge 100yd/100M 4rd groups Center Fire

I like it :)

another challenge would be the most consecutive offhand shots on a given target size (6", 10 inch plate, whatever... I usually use an 8x11" piece of paper) without a miss! Whoever can get the most consecutive hits wins!

After visiting with Ultramag this morning I slipped out to the club range to sight-in my Kimber .338 Win that I changed the rings and bases on last night. I also had to confirm the zero and CCB shot for another Kimber, that one a 7mm Select grade.

I thought I'd rip a couple groups, one with the .338 and another with an LSS 30-06 that I've fitted with a Shilen trigger and 10 shot quik clip conversion.

what's the ammo you're using on the left hand target?

BTW, good shootin'!

The left target (.338 Win)is 215 grain Sierra boattails over 69.5 grains of IMR 4350 in Win Brass. 2900 fps. The other is my "house load" 50.5 grains of Varget under a 165 grain Hornady. Or 165 grain anything for that matter. I've got some good culling miles on that load, and it shoots well in every '06 I've tried it in. I've got 4.

I've been practising offhand shooting as much as i can, i found that range trips off the bags happened too much, and practical, offhand, realworld hunting shots only happened in hunting season. Busted a clay pigeon at +/- 100yds yesterday and was quite pleased with myself, repeatability? More practice is in order.

Great response and some good shooting (Dogleg, Redmist). About the sling, as long as you are standing up and nothing but your feet touch the ground, go for it. I've lightened up my accutrigger, hoping that helps a little. Besides work, I'm waiting for the yearly powder/bullet order to restock. I've bubbaed a Mosin, that will be the next one to try.

Thanks. the pattern reminded me of one of mine, not at all like yours.

2850 in the summer. 2650 at 20-30 below, 2750 around zero. So much for "Temperature insensitive". My consolation is that H4350 and RL 19 and 22 are even slower in the cold.

I've only chronographed that load in my 24" Cooper, but its enough to make me run home and hug my .300s.

That's quite a variance! Decent speed at the top end though...When winter projects at the house are done I have a curiosity about Varget with 150/155's out of an '06 that needs to be satisfied...

Its quite a variance, but its surprisingly workable. I had a CDS dial cut for the winter speed with 100 yards at the zero distance. When it warmed up my 500 yard POI was 5 inches high or 1 MOA. Working backwards, I sighted the Cooper for 500 yards, then slid the scale until the dial read 500 too. Of course that moved the 1 MOA error back to 100 yards, but hitting inch low at 100 didn't amount to much. Especially when I carried it at the 200 yard marker anyway.

I did get another dial cut to correct the error, but in the real world it didn't make any difference as long as the longer sight in was used. I did get a new one made with the zero distance set for 200 yards and 2850 fps engraved, and I don't have to look at that 2650 fps marking on the dial anymore.

For what its worth, switching to boat-tail bullets makes a 1/2 MOA difference in the 500 yard POI.

When the snow goes down I'm gonna try and do some video shooting a running deer target off hand...

So.......This is off hand?

Just pullin you leg...The velocity difference you stated has my interest...I noticed that also some time ago when I had a Chrony (house fire)...What I wanted to try, but never got around to was keeping the ammo warm, and seeing what the -20 to -30 temps out of that cold of barrel does to velocity...

So.......This is off hand?

Depends whether you want to hit anything past powder-burn range. Another number that matters is the difference in POI shooting offhand as compared to shooting from a rest. For me it tends to hit 2 -3 MOA lower offhand, but varies from rifle to rifle.

Is Varget one of the temp insensitive powders? I have quite a few loads built with recent H4350 and from +35 to -10 I have maybe 25fps of variation.
In fact the loads I built for a friend with 58grs under 165gr interlocks is still rocked 2900ish in -6 and it was 2900ish at +38 when I put them together.
The RL19 loads on the other hand lost 140fps.

Varget was the first powder to be billed as temperature insensitive. When I was working up the loads for my Cooper 30-06 I started with H4350, first because its speeds are usually right up there and second because I needed a powder easily available in Australia. I had to develope the loads in the winter, because I had a deadline to get my gun permits and I needed to know that the rifles and loads were ready.

H4350 (ADI A2209) seemed a natural being made there and has 30-06 writen all over it, but in the cold (-20-30C) it was lucky to make 2600 fps with 165s. Varget did a little better and had better accuracy. The slower burning powders could still be relied on to kick harder while they shot slower.

Someone posted a string of targets and their velocities while working up some 30-06 loads in the winter awhile ago. All the usual powder suspects were there, but a feeble old guy could swim faster than most of them. Can't remember who it was, but maybe he'll see this and chime in.

So, are "the rules" for this challenge:
* centerfire rifle chambered to a caliber legal to hunt big game
* no rifle / optics /bullet restrictions
* Offhand standing postion only (may use sling support)
* target must include four target points (aiming circles) on a single sheet of paper
* To post must, shoot four shots inside each target circle with no shots falling outside the circle
EDIT: "inside target circle"
