Standing Offhand Challenge 100yd/100M 4rd groups Center Fire

I gotta try this! Just got my meat seeker back from the gunsmith, got a new recoil pad on it...Didn't have the heart to chop the barrel. Would a Styrofoam plate work for a target?

Personally I just use a piece of paper that I draw a dot on with a sharpie. I'd say add a scale(tape measure) in the pic if using something without gradations on it.

Bubbaed Mosin Offhand target

For back round on the rifle see "Mosin Bubbaed" in Red Rifle forum. 4 rd group off hand at 100M this afternoon. Factory irons highlighted with silver model paint.

Good job. Have you ever found that its easier to shoot offhand with the irons?

No, I'm just waiting for my powder order to come in to load some more for the scoped '06. I find lifting the sights from below the target and letting my trigger finger squeeze when the sight picture crosses center to work well. The Mosin trigger is a challenge though. I spent some time today shooting a scoped SR22 at 100M. The lighter trigger and being able to see clearly made a big difference. If the scope on it wasn't so crappy.... I've adjusted the accutrigger lighter on the '06 and expect to see a significant improvement when I use it again.

Agree...

I particularly like to shoot off hand at moving targets...Have gotten very good at it over the years...Some clubs around me actually have a few competitions every year doing just that...I have outshot many a competent paper puncher in these competitions...These guys tear me a new one on the bench competition without breaking a sweat...Gotta be good at something!

Its weird for me I can shoot off hand moving targets much better than stationary targets. I once tried the 22 on the trap range and hit 2 of 3, with a scope.

My opinion is that off hand groups don't mean a lot in MOA terms

Rather the individual shot's accuracy in that instance.

I have shot more animals off hand than any of the other support methods... This year I took my moose at 220 yards off hand, no issues, one shot...now that said, I had fired thousands and thousand of rounds of hand before I ever sat to my first bench.

I put clay pigeons at 100 m and 150 m and as long as I'm busting them, the MOA is meaningless to me for that type of shooting.

At 300 m I shoot off hand at my gong...

Now as some of you may have already guessed, this is with my 30-30... :)

Will throw up a vid tomorrow...

That's been my experience... I think maybe all the wiggles and wobbles apparent with using a scope aren't so apparent with irons, so you shoot when it looks right instead of trying to get a perfect hold.

That's because having the gun in motion smooths out all the wobbles I spoke of above. Be prepared to catch some flak for shooting aerial targets with a .22.

I find the same thing,as long as the target and sights are suited to each other. When I do more offhand prsctice with either sight I also force myself to shoot fast when the sights are moveing onto the target the first time instead of waiting until the 17th perfect sight picture which can only get worse.

Besides, once speed is taken out of the offhand equation it loses much of its utility.

It must be close to spring somewhere? Not here though.

Anyway, I dragged my kid along while I was testing some loads today and he pops a few off at 100 yards, offhand. Rifle is a M700 BDL Synthetic that I got used off the EE with a 2.5-8 VX-111 acquired the same way. Barrel is shortened to 20" and it is fitted with a 10 shot quik klip. The load is 48 grains of 4320 under 165 grain Hornady Spire-points. Shoots pretty good.

I was at a shoot at a range a few years back. It was a bit of a fundraiser. One of the games was to hit a steel gong. It was a 12 inch circle and about an inch thick. The gun was a scoped .25-06. Standing off hand shot at 200 yards. It cost $5 per round. Alot of experienced hunters/shooters lined up and laid their money down to try their hand at this and embarassed themselves, myself included. The club made a pile of cash.
Shooters/Hunters need to practice the types of shots that they are likely to encounter. This is often easier said than done, but off-hand at 100 yards is something that can be done at most ranges.

Paper pie plates work well for this type of shooting, especially with Irons. On another forum a few years back there was an informal challenge like this for open sighted lever guns where you took one shot from standing at targets @50yds, 75rds, 100yrds, 125yrds, and 150yrds. Then went downrange and circled and noted any and all hits you made on the pie plate. Then you repeated the process for kneeling and sitting and I think once from a improvised rest i.e. side of a post simulating a tree trunk.

The Idea behind the one shot at each range was that usually only one shot is available in hunting before the animal takes off. It also required you to be deliberate with each shot as the wobbles soon came in. I found it very humbling but gotta try it again as well as this challenge. I really haven't been shooting enough lately :(

tried the challange today with my Marlin 1895, Factory iron sights. Guess its about 4.5"
200M was not good at all! all over the paper. but, for me the front sight all but covered the
paper. I'll try again with a scope sometime, see if it improves. Just a note on the new Marlin
Its about 3 months old and I am very pleased with the quality of the gun. I didnt even adjust the
sights.
