Tavor VS Type 97??

I am sorry, but I can't compare it with the Tavor b/c I didn't shoot them side by side. Now I regret I didn't do it before I sold them :( Anyway I put only a very limited number of rounds thru the Tavor insufficient to form an opinion. And that would not be a very relevant opinion anyway b/c my Tavor had few differences if compared with the ones brought by Canam, the most important were the trigger pull, the mount for optics and some other things. I had to sell because of some changes in my family situation and I could keep only very few guns. I hope I will not regret what I chose to sell.

Thanks for your your thoughts. I feel your pain....It sucks when you have to sell guns. I recently reduced the size of my collection to focus on a few guns I know I'll shoot a bunch. All the safe queens went to buy more expensive toys.
 
Clobbersauras, just wondering if you have owned or own an AR and have compared it to the Type 97a, or if anyone on here has. I know they are 2 very different firearms but they do technically fill the same roll. .556 Black rifle. I currently love my Ar just because I am used to it and I love the accesories you can put with it. Just wondering for similar price range how the 97 compares?

Yes - I've owned an AR. I loved it and you can't beat it for customization. Also the Ar has some of the best controls of any rifle I've fired. The safety and mag release are perfect. It's easy to mount optics. I hate the charging handle and forward assist on the Ar, but it's a minor gripe becasue the charging handle, bolt release, and forward assist work as they were designed to. Ar's are reliable if you clean them frequently. It was never an issue for me, it worked 100% and was quite accurate.

I love the Type 97. It's much shorter and points better than my AR did. The trigger is good, and the charging handle is easy to operate. It's easy to field strip, but the Ar was pretty darn easy as well. The safety isn't as easy to operate, but that's a minor issue for me. The mag release was poorly thought out. It has a gas regulator and is piston driven, a major plus over the AR. But I haven't subjected it to torture test, and probably never will. If I had to guess I think it would outrun an AR in terms of reliability, but who knows????......it's a very subjective comparison. Mine has been 100% reliable. If the type 97 had the aftermarket support that the AR platform has all it's shortcomings could be rectified....

Bottom line is I'd still choose the 97 over an AR in the same price range. I think aftermarkets will come, especially if Marstar brings in the non-restricted version. I just which I new someone in my area with a Tavor so I could compare them.

Still 2" groups from factory rifle is pretty decent.

When they come out with Non_restricted I will probably buy one...if it is in 7.62x39.

You know the PLA spent millions of dollars to upgrade from 7.62x39 system. Now all you want is the old one? :)

The AR is much faster to operate - period. If you run the type 97 in any action shooting scenario in a "first world" nation, you won't be allowed to run a hot rifle with a round in the chamber without the safety on. The time to fiddle with the safety is impractical. The PLA probably has a very different manual of arms from us. This is just a technical issue of how you run your rifle. If this is just a gopher rifle, it dosn't really matter - you have all the time to upload and load. No way the type 97 can replace the AR as a "social or action rifle" for people who are trained to ( or dictated to) the commonly accept safety practices up here in the North America.

As a range rifle, I think it is good value if the price is right. As a fighting rifle, I am going with an AR even if I have to pay much more.

I agree the AR is faster..period. The Type 97 mag release is not user friendly and needs a mod to make it even passable..but if someone wants to build one it's an easy mod (c'mon all you machine shop guys!!!).

Not nearly as speedy as you see guys doing them in a three gun match eh? I would hazard a guess that in the same situation and with an ambi mag release a type 97 mag change would only be a fraction of a second slower, but in a much more portable and potentially reliable package...

but once again who knows?...I'm just playing devils advocate...

I did not suggest at any point that the results I posted were from a rifle out of the box. Lector is going to explain one of these days what he did to the rifle.

I realized that....but you didn't state what the groups were like out of the box before mods were done.

Regardless, the groups b4 and after the mods are both good.
 
So whats the timeline on 97's coming in at an $800 price range? And will this just be for the non-resricted or are the restricted's going to drop down to this price too? just out of curiosity does any one have the overall measurement for both the shorty and the full length and their respective barrel lengths... haven't been able to find positve confirmation on this just wodnering how they compare to their ar counterparts with similar length barrels.

Timeline: I had a chance to speak to someone at Lever a few days ago. Appears right now China is struggling to produce enough rifles to equip their military and civilian production is at the very bottom of priority list. I understand Lever did some kind of miracle bringing those few units into Canada.

But they have enough capacity to produce containers of M4-knock offs for civies and the FARC,plus keeping the supply for the Sri Lankan and Burma military.......well, there needs to be a justification for the 1450 price tag. :)

Apparently they are not really "struggling", just not enough ordered. I must say I am skeptical, especially when the price is falling already.

Hi Greentips - another retailer on this board, one that is more respected than lever, told me that he can't get anything out of china until november this year. It's not just type 97's, it most everything. Things that were in the pipeline are comming but no new production until November....PM inbound.
 
I understand that they want to have the port free of all kinds of nasty things for the olympics. I went to get some fireworks for Canada day and that is what the wholesaler said.. Nothing till after the olympics are over. I guess that they do not want to have any kind of items for terrorists to use.
 
Well to get this thread back on track I took my 97 shorty to the range today. Put another 100 rounds through it (zero problems so far). The following was a 75 yard group, using 55 grain winchester white box, trying to shoot between lulls of 20 km/h wind gusts. Optics were an Aimpoint micro (4moa).

I can vouch for the wind, it was howling up there. Still a great day of shooting! :D Not a bad group considering....
